It has certainly been a busy start to the summer for Milan as they sacked Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara less than 48 hours after the final game of last season, with Furlani and chief scout Geoffrey Moncada stepping up to control transfer business.

Their first major decision was to approve the divisive sale of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle United for a club-record fee, leaving a midfield to be rebuilt but the funds to address other areas of the squad too.

Scaroni spoke to Il Foglio on the sidelines of the ‘Joyride the Future’ event organised by Milan and BMW Italia to celebrate the extension of their partnership together, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“AC Milan fans, rest assured, Giorgio Furlani is building a Champions League team. The team he’s gearing up to play at high levels, with tall, strong, technical and fast players,” he said.

“We’re working to build something important and we’re doing it at a good pace, I’d say, also because there’s been a lot of new things.”

On the new signings: “We like strong players, by now the fans are getting used to it well. We make one purchase a week. I want to be clear though, since there are six weeks left until the transfer window closes, don’t expect another six signings… better to be honest.”

On Pioli: “Stefano is a person of good character, so we trust in his smile, we are hoping for a great job.”
