CM: Signing, sale, renewal and recovery – the future of Milan’s CB department

The Milan management have clear ideas about how they want the squad to look numerically going into 2022-23, and specifically the centre-back department.

Calciomercato.com take a look at the situation surrounding Milan’s current central defensive options and recall how Simon Kjaer – who will be back for next season as his recovery from a serious knee injury continues – wants to retire at the club and will therefore have a spot in the squad.

Alessio Romagnoli needs replacing because he seems set to join Lazio and will not accept the lower offer from the Rossoneri, and the man who is very close to coming in as his replacement is Sven Botman of Lille. Once qualification for the next Champions League is safe, everything will be completed.

Kjaer and Botman are very much the ‘old man and the rookie , the rookie’, which should be added to the current starting pairing of Fikayo Tomori and Pierre Kalulu who are untouchable both on the field and in the plans for the future. In fact, for the Frenchman a renewal offer is planned which would see him extend his deal until 2026 with substantial pay rise.

Matteo Gabbia is a variable to consider if there should be any hitch in the Botman deal or if Kjaer’s rehabilitation path takes a negative turn.
