Sacchi throws weight behind Pioli but chooses his favoured successor: “He knows Serie A”

By Euan Burns -

Former AC Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi has shown support for Stefano Pioli and believes that the coach should be kept at the club, but he has a name in mind for the eventual replacement.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Radio Rossonera), Sacchi explained that Pioli deserves more respect for what he has done as the Milan coach over the years and given the names on offer, he should be kept at the club.

“Pioli deserves respect for what he gave and how he behaved. I have seen the names that are circulating, for which I have deep respect, but they would need to adapt everyone to Italian football, so why not keep Pioli?” Sacchi said.

He went on to discuss the coaches that could replace Pioli if he is dismissed at the end of the season, immediately mentioning some of the bigger names that he feels are not going to be serious options for Milan.

“I don’t think that [Jurgen] Klopp, [Pep] Guardiola, [Carlo] Ancelotti, [Antonio] Conte are available for the Milan bench,” he said.

He then focused on Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi as the best available option right now, saying: “I would focus on a young profile like De Zerbi who has the right experience, knows Serie A and above all gives a style to his teams.”

Milan are being linked with a host of names for the not-yet vacant position, with Bologna’s Thiago Motta still in the frame as well as Portuguese coaches such as Sergio Conceicao and Paulo Fonseca.

Pioli is expected to be dismissed at the end of the season with one year left on his deal after the team’s failure to launch a title challenge and the poor European campaign.

  1. These are delusional thoughts from Arigo, everyone can see Sefano Pioli has nothing more to offer Milan, he is technically and tactically limited, unable to evolve new ideas, and lacks the courage to do what is right, even his backroom staff are limited.
This club needs a clear break from Pioli, he has burned out many players, he is unable to take these players further, all the players he cast aside are playing well elsewhere, Arrigo is a mad man..

    1. But we should give pioli some slack, the guy took a Milan side that was mediocre to win the serie a with them and also took the team to the champions league semi finals for the first time in more than a decade. he deserves some praise

      1. It was Sinisa and Ibra who won scudetto for us. Where was and is Pioli when there’s no Ibra to lead the team on the field?

        1. Sinisa onlu manage to draw against Inter one time yet you never credit our win against all the other team to Pioli but to Ibra who only play handful of game that season

          1. It wasn’t a draw it was the win. SMH
Pioli tactics are limited, he can’t do more than he already has. Aside from scudetto he never made any competition final

      2. He got praise.. now he didn’t do jack sh*t. Or should we praise him for the rest of his life, day in day out for what he achieved with Milan?

    1. 0 Shot on target you said, will Pioli get on the field to take a shot for the players? NO

So your say is not valid

  2. Some of you have problems reading. Sacchi is saying in light of the best coaches not being available, Pioli should stay.

    1. Nobody has problems reading. Whether the best coaches are available or not, times up for Pioli. The best coaches will never be available to us anyway.

  3. We actually might easily end up with 80+ points and 2nd place this year with Pioli which is still so much better than any coach from 2013 until Pioli era. Yes, maybe we need a change but will a next coach be able to win 80 points or even get us to Champions League??? We need to chose wisely or we might easily end up at 8th or 10th place next year and cry for Pioli!!!

  4. I’m starting to think that Sacchi has a crush on Pioli.

The guy rides Pioli harder than a fat chick at a free burger event.

    1. He was being considerate and knows they’re not better coach at cheap cost milan management want.

The good coach’s are very expensive and milan can’t avoid them… all the aforementioned coaches had never tasted any glory or trophy with big and ambitious club like milan…

Looking into their past work, i don’t think any of them does better than Pioli.

Yes Milan need a change, I want change but it has to come with any upgrade not taking us two steps backward.

      My say!

      1. Are we really ambitious, because it seems like top 4 spot and CL participation has been the goal, rather than actually wanting to win trophies this past few seasons.

Bar the one we won, when everything aligned for us.

  5. Sachi said true , none of expensive coach can be hiring by ACM . In the past sachi , capello , ancelotti are not the expensive coach , it is ACM that make the coach have bigname
