GdS: Milan in total defensive emergency ahead of Juventus game – the solutions

By Euan Burns -

A combination of injuries and suspensions means that AC Milan have a serious defensive problem ahead of the Serie A clash with Juventus this weekend.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the events of the derby defeat against Inter on Monday night will be felt into the Juventus game on Matchday 34 after both Davide Calabria and Theo Hernandez received red cards.

As well as that, Fikayo Tomori picked up a yellow card which means that he is also suspended, and that is three of the usual defensive starters.

Those suspensions coupled with Pierre Kalulu and Simon Kjaer being injured create a serious problem for Stefano Pioli who has rarely been able to field his favoured defence this season.

It will be yet another makeshift backline in front of Mike Maignan, with Matteo Gabbia and Malick Thaiw expected to be the starting centre-backs.

Alessandro Florenzi will have to play on either the right or the left, and then one of Yunus Musah, naturally a midfielder, and Filippo Terracciano will be on the other flank.

After those options, Pioli would have to turn to the Primavera side for depth, meaning some unfamiliar names may be on the bench at the Allianz Stadium.

  1. I really want to see Filippo Terracciano get a run from the start. We’ve seen so little of him since he arrived. Surely that is a better option than playing Musah out of position in another different role.

    1. Same here. He played a lot for Verona before so he should be ready (mentally, at least).

But he won’t ever be ready if he never given any chance to play.

Need to see Zeroli, Simic and Terraciano given more playing time in the last 5 matches in Serie A, because we have almost nothing to play for.

  2. Simic at CB next to Gabbia please and/or Bartesaghi at left back. If this is going be an experimental sh*tshow might as well truly experiment.

    1. You want to put half a defence that just conceded 3 goals against Olympiacos youth team against Juventus? Pls don’t.

One of them should be fine, in this case, Simic to partner Gabbia – and maybe more from bench. But not everyone.

  3. Florenzi, Simic, Gabbia and Terra/Bartesaghi (???)
Or, and this can’t be ruled out….he puts Flo and Gabbia as CBs, Musah at right back and I still have no clue who will play left back.
Oh wait… Musah(RB), Gabbia, Simic, Florenzi (LB) …there ya go 🥴

  4. If he actually tries to play musah at wingback again instead of giving Terracciano a chance, he may as well concede defeat by the first whistle. Why does he just Refuse to give some players chances? You’re out in the summer anyway, give the kid some minutes to learn

  5. Musah as a RB would be complete madness! Especially after the last three losses in a row and players used out of position.
