CM: Milan offered chance to sign midfielder who cost Man Utd €45m – the response

By Oliver Fisher -

The winter market has been closed for almost a month now, but since then a new but equally important phase has opened concerning players on expiring contracts.

Earlier on Monday we published a feature regarding five upcoming free agents that AC Milan might look at, and one of the players mentioned was Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Serbia international’s future is up in the air as his deal technically expires on June 30 of this year, but there in the option for an automatic extension for a further 12 months in favour of the Red Devils.

The problem currently is that although Matic would welcome the extension, it is United that are not convinced due to his age (31) and the salary he earns at present.

For this reason, his agents have started to spring into action in case of a farewell at the end of the season, and the report claims that Milan were offered the chance to sign Matic.

However, they immediately replied that they were not interested, not so much for the player’s qualities but because his salary, in period where expenditure is under serious scrutiny, is not sustainable in the budget.

Juventus have also been offered the chance to sign the former Chelsea man, who signed for United for €45m, but for now the Bianconeri are not interested. Finally there is Inter, the only club not to have closed the door on his arrival.

Because of this, and while we await the decision of Manchester United, the future of Matic remains in doubt.
