Di Marzio says Milan were ‘hoping for someone better’ than Jovic in the summer

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan signed Luka Jovic on deadline day this past summer and the Serbian is yet to find the back of the net for his new side. As confirmed by Gianluca Di Marzio, he certainly wasn’t the Rossoneri’s first target.

Milan were heavily linked with Mehdi Taremi all summer and when that move broke down, they probed the ground for several strokes in the final days of the mercato. In the end, they ended up with Jovic who arrived on a free transfer from Fiorentina.

The 25-year-old has made three appearances thus far, one from start, and he has not impressed. Speaking to Sky, as cited by our colleagues at SempreMilan.it, Gianluca Di Marzio spoke about the move.

“Milan signed Jovic because he was the easiest to get in the summer. Milan waited until the last minute because they were hoping for someone better,” he stated.

Jovic was not called up by Serbia’s national team and will thus be able to work on his physical condition at Milanello during the break. Hopefully, he will improve after the break, as Milan have a tough schedule on the cards.

    1. Colombo wanted to leave – even though it was pretty obvious he’d have seen plenty of playing time. Personally I’d rather we have players in the squad who actually want to play for Milan.

    2. Colombo asked to be loaned out to get playing time.
I think he a lost cause now as the club didn’t put faith in him. Next year a high profile striker will come with Giroud and Okafor both being a back up. Colombo should be sold with a buy back clause to Monza now.

    1. I think we should consider the fact that we almost had Taremi, who then changed his mind and that we brought Jovic in pretty much the last hour.
But again, his contract expires this year, so worst case scenario we won’t have the same drama that we had with Origi

      1. Taremi scored 1 league goal in 8 outings so far.

Doubt that he would do much better being here. And that is for the price of 15-20 million.

        1. I my recent posts I was severely against him coming this winter or summer. I don’t see him as a good professional, he seems to have his mind elsewhere, and he already fooled us once.

  1. They need to get a proper player in January, not next summer. Jovic can be the 3rd striker until June and leave after that, he is used to warming the bench in the past 4-5 seasons.

  2. It is better to use more Okafor on Girouds position, than wasting games with Jovic.
If Jovic stays next season, he should be given less salary, and with Giroud as second option, new central forward must be someone who will make immediate impact. That is most necessary thing for next year champions league competition.

    1. Jovic is not staying at the rate he is going.
Milan has no obligation to him after this season, and only an option to sign him permanently, as technically he is on loan and his contract runs out next summer.
So, most likely he will be free to fing his next bench to warm after next summer

  3. For people to think that Milan should have kept Colombo instead of signing Jovic tells me that they have never seen Colombo play but they are hyping him up just because he is a Milan youth product.
Colombo scored 5 goals for Lecce last season. His replacement has already scored 4 this season.
He has a strong left foot, nothing else.
Jovic didn’t play bad vs Genoa. Every time he touched the ball he did good. He protected the ball, had a good hold up play and passed it to the open teammate. The problem was that he wasn’t getting the ball and that’s on his teammates not him. He is a striker not a regista. He depends on his teammates. You could have Haaland up there but if you are playing like Milan plays and not feeding him balls it won’t make any difference.
The problem is the stale offensive plays Milan has.
Pioli has never been good at opening up defenses that sit back. Under Pioli no matter which players are on the field, Milan is only dangerous on the counter attack. All opposing teams have to do vs Pioli’s Milan is let them have the ball. They’ll pass it laterally or backwards, or give it to the wingers and hope they can do something on their own.
High press and counter attack is all he knows. If that doesn’t work there is no back up plan, there are no other ideas.
So far this season Milan has scored zero goals in the UCL and last season when they got to the semi final, they scored 3 goals in 6 knock out stage games. So Milan has scored 3 goals in the last 8 UCL games combined. And no that’s not because the strikers were missing chances, Milan barely created any chances. And the 3 goals they scored, surprise surprise, from a counter attack. Look them up.
Milan needs to sign a real striker, but unless Pioli figures out how to use him outside of counters, it won’t make much difference.

    1. That’s statistics sound right if compare to quality of players.
I would say only from this season we have good players, (not strong, not best) but good players on each position. Last year we didn’t have players on bench and neither on right flank.
So for Milan to become stronger team, having better statistics against strong European team more quality players are needed which affect in creating more revenue.

      1. Milan scores only on the counter attack in serie A as well.
Milan might not have the quality to compete with the top clubs in Europe but for serie A they have better squad than 95% of the league.
Also, Newcastle, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham, Napoli and Inter are not Real Madrid, ManCity, Bayern.

    2. after rewatching the dortmund game. Its hard to blame one person but at least 2 goals should have been scored and the stats back it up. Pioli isnt allowed to run on the field to finish…he can just put his team in a position to win. Which he accomplished in both champions league games.

      Genoa
Okafor missed two sitters one cross from chuck and one from Musah.
Pulisics goal was a master class in tricking their zonal marking into 4 defenders out of position.

Milan’s press has not been effective in springing counters as we arent winning the ball in good areas. Did anyone watch the Napoli vs Fiorentina, Fiorentinas defensive stats are very impressive.

    3. Jovic is still able to score 10-20 goals a season but he is not a lone striker to play. He doesn’t have a physicality to start with and is not that tall. We obviously only took him as noone else was available and Pioli didn’t believe in Okafor or Colombo getting 20 games a season in attack.

  4. Waiting and hoping doesn’t get you results.
I’ll say it again. The St has been an issue since piatek fiasco and even before that.. Ibra and Giroud were bandaids.

  5. Pfft, this article and the comments are crazy, he’s just gotten to fitness. Give him a proper chance before writing him off. Yes, Milan wanted a bigger name and other targets, Jovic is who we have and doesn’t have a bad record so let’s get behind him.

  6. I think we should use Charles De Ketelaere as STC, because he is good as Second-Striker at Atalanta. And in our 4-3-3, the lone striker can be a False Nine or even Trequartista, like Prime Benzema at Real Madrid & Prime Firminho at Liverpool.

  7. we need tactical coach that knows how to open defence from mid field play to the attack. . . .
pioli doesnt have that in his locker. . . .
we need a coach like tottenhams coach, after kane left. check out the way tottenham are playing now, with 3-4 passes they open your defence. gbam.

  8. Man this is just sad. I know we want better players for our team but we’re A.C Milan. We have to be classier than this. If news like this is out, imagine what he must be going through knowing that. He’s a decent striker who has fallen on hard times which may or may not be if his own making.
Let’s just give him a shot.

  9. Would have preferred Colombo to stay, and yes of course he wanted to go and get regular playtime, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to play for Milan, just means he wants to improve and to improve you need to play, hopefully he will have a good season and come back to us stronger.
With regards Jovic, give him a chance FFS, only had one start and was a late arrival so still getting up to speed, support our players, stop hating on them all the time
