Gasperini says he ‘immediately’ saw De Ketelaere as a striker and explains the signing

Gian Piero Gasperini has once again shared his thoughts on Charles De Ketelaere and why he pushed Atalanta to loan the Belgian from Milan this summer. For him, the youngster was always a striker.

Milan and Atalanta reached an agreement for the loan of the former Club Brugge man with the following formula: €3m paid loan, €22-23m buy-out, €4m in bonuses and a 10% future resale clause. In addition to that, the Bergamo club will cover his salary for this season

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, as cited by MilanNews, Atalanta manager Gasperini shared his thoughts on De Ketelaere. He also explained why he has started playing him as a striker rather than a No.10.

Was there a particular match that made you want him?

“No, there wasn’t a particular match that made me bet on him, there were some characteristics that I was convinced I could work on. Charles was already highly regarded. An easy bet.”

Did you immediately see him as a striker?

“Yes, because he is rewarded above all by the things he does in attack. It’s the nature that dictates the role. However, it must be said that Charles works a lot. I didn’t think he ran so much.”

Milan will make a small capital gain att the end of the loan, should Atalanta decide to redeem him, and under the circumstances, this must be considered good business. In any case, there’s still a lot left of the season.

    1. 3 mil to borrow him for 12 months. More than enough time to try him out, test him and evaluate him, and then have the option, not obligation, to buy him or not, it kind of is an easy bet.

  1. A striker that can’t win physical duals is useless. He’s a second striker, not one that can lead the line by himself (at least not in a league like Serie A, EPL, etc.). No way we were going to use him as the sole striker in place of Giroud. He isn’t a winger or trequartista either, hence his ineffectiveness in those positions when we played him there. For me this is a closed case. Good luck to CDK, and we’ll use his buy out money for a player that is more useful to us in 2024.

        1. Lol, point taken. But there was only one Pippo, and it was in a different era. And his thing was about positioning. I’ve been watching Atalanta games, and CDK isn’t the next Inzaghi.

    1. It was the translation. What he said was CDK is a box player.

I said that for the umpteenth time, CDK is a box player, but Pioli thought otherwise.

He may not be the best player out there, but we could have done better with him.

  2. A striker who can’t score goals.
His great start for Atalanta consists of 1 goal in 8 games, which was a tap in

I hope for his sake he finds confidence/form.
For me he is one of the most overrated and overpriced players in the history of the game

  3. He is just second striker, cannot play as single striker in ACM 433. Formation there 352 in atalanta suit CDK . Go activate the buy option mister gasp
