GdS: Not only a striker – Milan’s ideas to bolster the midfield and defence

By Oliver Fisher -

The signing of a new striker will attract the most attention when it comes to AC Milan’s summer transfer window, but there are other positions that the management will address.

According to what is being reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), Milan wants to add a defensive midfielder and there is a name that the hierarchy appreciate more than the others: Youssouf Fofana of Monaco.

He is a name to follow because he is the right age, has international experience and a contract expiring in 2025. There is some international competition however, because his performances and contract situation have attracted clubs around Europe.

Milan will certainly sign a full-back, ideally a player capable of lending a hand on the right and left sides. Juan Miranda of Real Betis has been widely spoken about and he remains the subject of discussion within the club.

He would be a deputy to Theo Hernandez, and though he has never been tested in Italy he has room for growth and would be available on a free transfer.

The big decision, however, will be in defence. Milan have always placed a lot of emphasis on Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw, while in recent months they have understood that Gabbia can be much more useful than expected.

The idea that those four plus a young player (Jan-Carlo Simic, possibly) could be a solution for 2024-25 has been put to the test by Roma and by the too many goals conceded this season.

Here too, there is a crossroads: either Milan must decide that, with a new coach, that group can work, or they must invest in a starting centre-back. There is a problem: the budget will not be infinite.

  1. We should sell one of Thiaw/Kalulu and sign a good CB, I don’t think we need a LB we already have 2 very good LB in the youth team. A RB should be the priority, as well as a holding midfielder and of course a striker.

  2. Enough with the bloody cheap foreign players, we need italian blood, look at Roma with the passion of Mancini, Pellegrini, Bove, spinazzola, all ready to bleed for the club……all we have is a bunch of foreigners strolling around not giving a fxck….we need a few key Italians to build around, scalvini, Ricci and start using our young stars like Bartesaghi and Zeroli, enough with the cheap imports who have no passion for the club

      1. Like signing of Fofana or Markus thuram, then sign Albert Gudmasson and ardan Fuller for attacking midfield then bring back Chaka Traore, then sign a deputy of chukwueze shift pulisic to attacking midfield sell Loftus cheek then sell tomori, thiaw,Kjaer and pobega sign two defenders to support Gabbia then we give N.okafor the striker then Jovic to be deputy then sell out Geroud

          1. Dude wants to sing 2 am players then shift pulisic to am.
Sell our best cb. And sell geroud who is out of contract this summer anyway..

            What an idi0t

    1. Thiago Silva, Kaka, Sheva, Seedorf, Rui Costa… and so on… all foreigners that bled for the club and showed pride. Nationality has nothing to do with it.

You have a very myopic view.

      1. We are not obliged to bring a full poor foreign players, enough is enough, Ac Milan needs competent I repeat competent Local players

  3. Ricci, Scalvini or Buongiorno and then the striker would be a good Mercato. Plus let’s get Bartesaghi, Zeroli, Camarda and Simic in there

  4. Buy low, sell high. It’s what the man himself said in podcast, was the reason for investing in football in Europe. Toulouse was his trial probe, Milan is his main milk cow. So expect more cheap moneyball imports.

  5. Sell Isma to finance 3 signings: a strong left-foated DB to replace Kjajer, a true defensive midfield to replace Isma and a n9 to replace Giroud. We need nothing else. Of course if we sell other players we would need replacements. But the priorities are clear.

      1. Fully agree, Fofana is another box to box. We need a true n6 with excellent defensive skills. The best Milan of the season was at the beginning with Krunic playing a n6. It is a difficult player to find, I was impressed by the difensive skills of Ederson but it’s too expensive. Ambrabat on loan could a safe option.

    1. Sell Isma to finance 3 signings? You think 25-30M€ will get us three quality players, eh? NOT. GOING. TO. HAPPEN.

      Sorry.

  6. I feel like we need to sort out the RB. Calabria is destined to stay. Florenzi hopefully less so. Difficult to understand Kalulu’s situation with all the injuries. When healthy he was a good option as RB, but now it’s hard to gauge. Will he regain form again hopefully? Or do they pull the trigger and just take the capital gain on him?
