GdS: Why Milan could have the edge over Inter in pursuit of Bologna star

By Euan Burns -

Inter and AC Milan are set to do battle for Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee but the Rossoneri may have the upper hand on the Serie A champions.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, there are two main reasons as to why Milan could beat Inter to the signing of Zirkzee, despite the Nerazzurri being the new Serie A champions as of Monday evening.

Perhaps the most important thing is that Milan can offer Zirkzee an immediate starting role in the team. With Olivier Giroud leaving for LAFC, Luka Jovic will be the only recognised striker at the club and Zirkzee would certainly start ahead of the Serbian.

This is something Inter cannot necessarily offer given their front two are Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, players who do not deserve to be dropped or replaced.

The benefit for Milan is a financial one. They currently have Alexis Saelemaekers on loan at Bologna and he has been playing well. There is a clear desire for the Belgian to stay at Bologna and he is valued at around €10m, so he would certainly form part of the negotiation.

Zirkzee would likely cost around €60m but Milan can knock a chunk off of that price by including Saelemaekers.

    1. Because they focused on depth for the most part. This summer instead of 10 players they will focus on maybe 3-4 class players and a big part of the budget will be spent on the new no.9 and many reports suggest 50 million is set as a budget for no.9 and alexis+50 million is around that 60 million

      1. LOL. Depth. How did that work out.

None of our midfield signings would even be in the top 4 midfielders when Milan won serie A.

        Tonali, Kessie, Bennie, Krunic
        vs
        Bennie, Reijnders, Adli, Musah

what an incredible display of signing backups.

Reijnders – pass merchant. Started as AM failed, replaced by RLC. Moved to double pivot, failed, replaced by Adli.

        Musah – 37 games. 0 goals. 2 assists.

Terracciano – did more for Milans opponents than he did for us. Worse, he couldn’t even average a 6 rating.

Chuk – most expensive player. Was expected to be a starter but couldn’t do it. Still can’t do it today. Scored a few goals but never lived up to his expectations as a 30m+ signing. Also, CDK outscored and out-assisted him by 2x. Even Saekemaekers outscored and outassisted him.
Sure, He could turn it around next year but this year is poo poo.

Pulisic & RLC – are the only bright spots.

What is the point of depth, if the people you sign are not replacing the people you are selling? Nor do any of these players contain Milan identity?

Moneyball Moncada made us a far worse team.

        1. Some good stats. With a new coach we hope that new lease of life can be pulled out of what we have already.
Gasperini seemed to work wonders for CDK.

      2. Apologies but do you not yet know who we are owned by???? Do you or anyone else really think Redbird will spend 50-60M on ANY player??? Don’t get me wrong I wish they would and do what you (and Maldini said to do after last year) – buy 3-4 “class” players – BUT this is Redbird and the chances of that happening are, let’s just say, slim to none based on their “moneyball” policy.

I think we end up with a player like Guirassy for under 20M and they call it a day. Hope i am wrong and we sign Zirkzee – but I just don’t see it without selling another core player (Mike, Theo, Leao)….

  1. This stte as igot surprised their Campagn of devaluated milan Players,
Are milan Player’s Price nor increased
Salamakers Curent Price in over $3M
But you cam say Bologna have bewn give $10m Option to buy.
    CDK $ over $45M
If plater achieve s well and Contrabutes high level skills his prices does up

  2. Forget this guy who is being chased by half a dozen clubs. If we’re willing to pay 50m cash for him, then offer that to Atalanta for Scamacca. They might accept given that they would be doubling their money in one season and I think Scamacca will be better than Zirkzee. I feel like Zirkzee will also follow Motta to Juventus, as it seems likely Juve is heading for a summer revolution which will include selling Vlahovic.

    1. Scamacca would be a lot cheaper than Zirkzee and is a safer bet too. Too bad he’s Italian and we all know what that means.

  3. When he signs I will believe it. There was a fair amount of talk and dialogue last season about all the players Milan had on their radar only for Inter to sign them.
