GdS: The mould of centre-back Milan want – Chelsea pair among six targets

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan decided not to make a centre-back signing during the winter transfer window, and now they are assessing options ahead of the summer.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) reports that the mould of the defender for the future – who will replace Simon Kjaer in the squad – was outlined recently by Stefano Pioli.

“He will have to be a solid, complete centre-back, capable of defending, of build-up, of participating in the attacking schemes,” the Milan coach said.

The paper states that Milan are going for a left-footed centre-back like Lilian Brassier. The negotiations over him started in January will be resumed in a few months, also because Brassier hasn’t changed his mind: he wants the Rossoneri.

Brest, who a month ago did not intend to go below €12m as their asking price, could lower their demands because Brassier’s contract will expire in a year and there will be no time to haggle over the fee.

Maxence Lacroix, the 23-year-old Frenchman who is currently at Wolfsburg, also has a contract until 2025. Milan asked for information in January, but the message received from Germany was clear: not for sale.

In June that stance will logically change and the Rossoneri will be able to negotiate the fee with the German club given that his deal will expire in one year from then.

Watch out for Tosin Adarabioyo, who came through Manchester City’s academy and has been playing for Fulham since 2020. In June he will be free to sign with another club and Milan will be first in line.

In the background three other names: Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth (also on an expiring deal and then Benoi Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea, physical condition permitting.

  1. These are the players that Milan wants because:

    1. Pioli wants them as their profile fits his style of play.
    2. The management wants them because they are generally young and represent potential increase in value.
    3. They are low hanging fruits that could ve sold for tidy profits in 2 seasons if they worked out great. Basically listing all players and sorting them according to their contract expiry.
    4. Most of these are baseless and journalists need to sell papers, blogs need to increase engagements, etc.

    Which one is it?

Usually the coach would request some sort of profile to the management who then study if the deal is possible given the financial restrictions and so on. But, with the rumours are rampant that Milan will probably part ways with Pioli, these sort of transfer news just boggles me.

Do the managements just draw up these ‘free or almost free’ players and just offered the list to the coach, whoever it is, and see if there are names they liked? The previous management was criticized for getting Pioli players who doesnt fit to his system. And this season onwards, isnt the coach supposedly given more say and request the kind of players that he wants? Did that not work out too great either, because we’re currently in a no man’s land?

  2. We are fxckd if these are the players management are targeting, not a single one in there worth even considering, let alone buying.

    Seems Buongiorno is forgotten now…..strange.

We should go all out for Scalvini and forget these second rate cheap options.

Scalvini, Buongiorno, Gabbia and Tomori….that will do nicely thanks….. I wish

  3. I personally say for CB options we should sell Kalulu and Gabbia . And brought Scalvini And Kevin Danso. So it would be Tomori Thiaw Danso Scalvini or better yet Buongiorno and Danso or Kossounou or Bella Kotchap closer ages so they could feel the pressure because of the age (tomori thiaw). For LB maybe Ait Nouri or try to make deal from calafiori or Parisi

  4. better to renew Kjaer. None of these seem better than what we have. Kinda looks they wanna buy just for the sake of buying. Pellegrino?

    1. Unfortunately Kjaer is on a down trajectory, he’s letting a lot more players get past him. That said, considering his experience and positional awareness I’d give him another year if we buy a solid DM in midfield that can help the defense be less exposed.
I don’t see Adli and Reijndeers able to act defensively even a year from now, and any new defenders won’t help much in that type of scenario.

The other possibility is that we’re planning to sell Leao and move to a 3-5-2 system in which case, buying a new central defender would make sense.

      1. Kjaer isnt a starter anyway. Thiaw and Tomori are, so as a 3rd, 4th option he is fine

If they get Leao money they wont buy a fringe CB. It will be Buongiorno 100%

  5. Cash plus CDK for Scalvini. Him and Thiaw could be the defence pillars for at least a decade. If any rich club offers good money for Tomori, i’d take it. Gabbia, Kalulu, Pellegrino / Simic are decent enough as back ups.

  6. I am sick of the news that “Milan interesting, Milan eyeing”, but in fact there are no done deals. How can they strengthen the weak area if no real action have been done? All of those news just a bird song..!!

Redbird, don’t stingy too much, please!

  7. Cash+CDK or straight only CDK
From Chelsea try for Cesare Casadei, Ugochukwu and give Disasi new start so get him too . Lesley can play as CDM disasi can be the new tomori and Casadei can become very good CM
