Longo: Milan must reach salary compromises in renewal talks with key duo

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are not just looking to reinforce the squad by signing players, but also by renewing the key players they already have. In recent weeks, work has begun for the renewals of Olivier Giroud and Mike Maignan, a report claims.

Maignan has been at Milan since 2021, when he arrived from Lille, and a pay rise is long overdue for the goalkeeper. He currently earns €2.8m per year and the goal will most likely be to bring him closer to Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao. Perhaps even higher, in fact.

As for Giroud, he renewed his contract ahead of the season and has been an important player, scoring eight goals and assisting an additional three (all comps). According to Daniele Longo of Calciomercato.com, Milan have begun renewal talks with both of these.

Giorgio Furlani knows that doubling Maignan’s salary likely won’t be enough, but a reasonable compromise must be reached between the parties. Having said that, the goalkeeper has made it clear that he wants to stay and even though it will take time, there should be a positive outcome.

Giroud, meanwhile, currently has a salary of €3.5m per year and given his age, Milan want to lower that slightly. He has offers from the United States and Saudi Arabia but priority has been given to the Rossoneri, who are willing to do a one-year renewal.

  1. I think given his importance now Girouds wages are absolutely ok and even if he drops his level a bit they would still be.

6m for Maignan would not be unreasonable but the amount of time he misses seem 5m like more fitting

  2. The club should do whatever it can to keep Maignan, he is worth it, as for Giroud, honestly we need a significant upgrade in that department, we need a younger , hungrier, striker, who is tactically and technically excellent, football has reached a level were by strikers need to know how to hold the ball, dribble and create chances for themselves, despite the fact the team and especially the midfield are not creating chances for the strikers, we need to move on, our strike force is very numb, we need a powerful forward, we is good with his feet, lay offs are not enough.
Another reason we need to move on from Giroud, we will continue to linger on with him, and thus will not address our problems…

  3. Maignan’s salary should depend on his fitness. If he’s out for months it should reflect on his salary. Not that he’d sign such contract though.
