MN: Why Conceicao is the candidate that seems to unite everyone at Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

As speculation continues to filter out about who might be the man to take over from Stefano Pioli as AC Milan’s head coach for next season, one name seems to be able to unify everyone.

According to MilanNews, Sergio Conceiçao spent Sunday in Switzerland closely watching his son Rodrigo who plays as a full-back for FC Zurich. Meanwhile, four hours away by car, Milan were experiencing a surreal situation with the fans going on strike and a winless streak continuing.

The Curva Sud explained their reasons for protesting in a statement that was distributed before the game yesterday and they called upon the management to show some ambition in order to take the next step in the project.

Julen Lopetegui was not considered the right man to do that, while Antonio Conte is but he is not a target. Conceiçao, on the other hand, is the compromise that could make everyone agree, providing that he can leave Porto.

Tomorrow André Villas-Boas will be officially become the president of Porto. He has already said that he wants to speak with Conceiçao to understand if there are the conditions to continue together.

This is not certain, because Conceiçao under the presidency of Pinto da Costa had enormous power and it remains to be seen if he will still have that. Indeed, the impression is that he has to compromise and this would be an advantage in Milan’s favour.

Having been at Porto since 2017, Conceiçao has the ambition of taking the next step. Not for money, but to compete at a higher competitive level in European football.

After having won everything in his homeland – to the point of being the most successful coach in Porto’s 130-year history – the seven years begin to weigh even more heavily with the departure of Pinto da Costa, who he wanted to stay.

Conceicao is an attractive candidate to Milan because he lacks very little. He has experience, charisma and a clear style of play, plus the possibility of using a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 to display his intense and aggressive football.

He wants his team to press high and move vertically at pace, a recipe that has borne fruit not only in Portugal, but which has also proven to be tremendously effective in Europe.

This is seen in the fact Porto almost always get through the group stage of the Champions League, even reaching the quarter-finals on a couple of occasions.

  1. Conceição perhaps can do better at these formations, and perhaps can take the best out of Leão if he’s not sold for 175M by management this summer..

    1. Selling Leao for 175 million would be like winning a scudetto.
No team is paying you that for Leao. You should celebrate if they pay you have that for him.

      1. Selling a star player like winning a scudetto… Not everybody is addicted to trading like Sandro was with gambling. Go root for Arthur Morgan or Bank of America if you enjoy capital gains, you are not a football enthusiast.

        1. As usual, Bartholomeo is too shallow to understand what is written.
Stick to writing xenophobic comments. That’s what you are good at.

          1. You literally wrote that. Now I understand why you enjoy that management. Still got the chills from Tonali’s sale, what a pure capital gain. Maybe not like a scudetto win, but a coppa win maybe.

I guess I could sue you for defamation also but I would rather advice you to consult for your binary vision of things.

    2. He should have done better than fighting to qualify for CL and sitting 18 points away from the 1 st place in a the Portuguese league with a team that is used to crush other Portuguese teams in the league.

Sergio Conceiçao is a clown that Mendez is desperate to fool someone to hire him l

  2. This is awful news.

Lopetegui was far better than Sergio Conceiçao and even Pioli is. Porto used to be like Bayern Munich in Portugal till this clown became their manager which is why Porto president lost his position after 42 years.
Porto is so bad this year they may not qualify to champions league next year.

Sergio Conceiçao is an awful manager, no results and no players development.
Another inflated Portuguese that Mendez is trying to sell for the next idiot management.

  3. De Zerbi and Motta are my favorites but if I’ve to go for a more tactically disciplined manager I’d go with Conceicao. Try to watch his Porto games against Italian clubs in Europe. He often outplayed them tactically so I believe he’d have no problems dealing with Inzaghi and Inter.

    1. He is so good Porto is struggling to guarantee CL qualification this year and they are just 18 points away from 1st place.

Try to read what Porto fans are talking about him and you will realize what a clown of a manager Conceiçao is.

      1. Admit I don’t follow the Portuguese league much but the games I saw his team played in Europe were of high level of intensity, moving well with purpose both defensively and attacking and you could see a lot of determination in his players. I especially like his organized high press and the quick transition of every player dropping deep whenever necessary. These were games against a strong Juve Barca Arsenal Milan Roma etc, so may not need to see him against likes of Boavista. Even Klopp did have a few seasons of struggling to qualify for the CL. There is no perfect coach my good friend.
