MN: Pioli to make eight changes and switch formation against Sassuolo

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are currently gearing up to face Sassuolo away from home and as per a report, Stefano Pioli is preparing maxi-rotation for the game. Indeed, eight changes will be made to the starting eleven, while a formation switch is on the cards as well.

Milan suffered a disappointing defeat against Roma mid-week and will be looking to bounce back against Sassuolo. However, with the reverse fixture against the Giallorossi scheduled for Thursday next week, Pioli will have to rest some of his stars tomorrow.

According to MilanNews, the manager is expected to make eight changes, replacing the entire XI except for Mike Maignan, Theo Hernandez and Tijjani Reijnders. He’s also set to deploy the 4-3-3 formation rather than the 4-2-3-1, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek set to get some rest.

Update: Maignan is suffering from fatigue and hasn’t been called up.

Predicted Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Sportiello; Florenzi, Kjaer, Tomori, Theo; Musah, Adli; Chukwueze, Reijnders, Okafor; Jovic.

Samuel Chukwueze has been in tremendous form lately so a lot of responsibility will fall on his shoulders. The same goes for Yacine Adli who, just like the Nigerian, came off the bench against Roma and helped Milan almost find an equaliser.

With Champions League qualification virtually secured (only one more win is needed), it certainly makes sense to preserve energy for the Roma clash. Especially since Liverpool might not make it to the final.

  1. Every time Pioli rotates players like this we end up losing the game or bring on subs to fight back to draw the game. This caused more stress and muscular strain on players like Leao and Pulisic.

This type of rotation NEVER goes well under Pioli. Smh

    1. In a sense, it is factually correct that every time we heavily rotated we ended up losing or drawing even against tomato cans.
However, in the end there is not a whole lot of difference between 2nd and 4th place and considering that we have a must win game in Roma next thursday and the derby the following monday, I think resting players for more important venues should come first. Can we really risk Tomori being suspended for the derby or a Leao/Theo/Calabria injury ?

  2. Resting a lot of players at the same time does not always work under Pioli. Somehow I’m convinced it might work this time around because of the line-up is still quite good. The likes of Leao, Bennacer, Giroud and Pulisic who were part of the first eleven did not perform well against Roma. They need rest and work on how to defeat Roma in the second leg.

Let’s not forget, Ancelloti used to do something similar for champions league matches and it worked well for him.

We have a good chance of winning the Europa now since Liverpool are already one foot out.

  3. Our problem is not the formation is that our coach does not want to field in some players that are Good like Kjaer,N.oah Okafor, and musah
