Ahead of the game between AC Milan and Roma this evening, Stefano Pioli spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on the task at hand. The manager reiterated that the Rossoneri players will need full focus, but always with a smile on their faces.
Milan have won their last seven games and are thus heading into tonight’s clash as favourites. However, having parted ways with Jose Mourinho, it’s much more difficult to assess Roma and it remains to be seen how the game will play out.
Speaking to Sky Italia this evening, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli shared his thoughts on the game and what is needed from his side. He also praised the fans, who always have supported the team and tend to be amazing on European nights.
On facing pressure with a smile…
“It has always been our way of working and preparing. We prepare with maximum concentration, but also with serenity.”
Does experience help?
“All experiences, especially in Europe, help. A few years ago, most of us were rookies. Now we have had solid experiences, positive as well as negative. We have to try to be the best version of ourselves as the opponents are of great quality.”
Do you feel the European atmosphere?
“You can feel it. Our fans are making us feel it too. We will try to play with great energy and quality. It’s only the first 90 minutes but it’s a match that can give us great guidance. ”
On the fact that goals away from home no longer count…
“Football is made up of situations and moments. When we have the ball we have to try to put them in difficulty and we have the individual qualities to do so. Then we will need a match of attention and clarity, above all to overcome the difficult moments that will surely come.”
The manager has made some changes, albeit expected ones, to the starting XI. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is back from his suspension while Fikayo Tomori will be sitting this one out. Ismael Bennacer has also recovered fully from the flu and starts in the midfield tandem.
