Romano: Milan refer to €175m clause for potential Leao sale – “Nothing is ongoing”

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao is a key player for AC Milan and a potential sale will not be cheap, as highlighted by a report. Indeed, the Rossoneri have also referred to the €175m release clause and will continue to do so.

The winger didn’t have a good game on Thursday evening, as Milan faced Roma in the Europa League quarter-final, and received a low score in our player ratings. For the reverse leg, the Rossoneri fans will be hoping for a completely different Leao, who surely is eager to redeem himself.

In his Daily Briefing newsletter, Fabrizio Romano shared an update on Leao amid some criticism after the game. Fans of other teams have been asking the journalist where the Portuguese winger’s future really lies, to which he replied the following…

“Rafa Leão was booed off after the defeat against Roma but honestly guys, I’d not make it bigger than it is… he had a bad game, it happens in football.

“AC Milan fans still love Leão as he’s a fantastic player and he has no problems with anyone. No relationship is broken because of one game.

“Nothing is ongoing in terms of a transfer elsewhere either, and no one has appeared with €175m for his release clause, so really nothing to it,” he stated.

As said, however, it’s clear that Leao will have to do a lot better in the reverse fixture against Roma. He’s expected to be rested against Sassuolo tomorrow so energy shouldn’t be a problem, while Pioli’s tactics will surely be slightly different.

  1. Don’t see him leaving, he is still our best player on his day. He will lose his freedom if he leave us for Man City, Bayern or Madrid and yeah no one is going to spend that much for him. Hopefully, him and Theo can stay in Milan a long-long time.

    1. He should lose that freedom with Milan if those clubs won’t accept it. You help people by disciplining them. Leao and Theo are talented but they (everyone in the team actually) are introducing too much of their own style into the coach’s playing identity. Or maybe it’s that Pioli doesn’t have one! I don’t see Pep or Ancellotti letting Theo with his endless runs down the middle of the field and gets a little frustrated when he struggles to run. Man just keep making accurate passes sometimes ,you don’t always have to bail the team with individual brilliance. And Leao staying away from areas inside the box were he could better be engaged in scoring when crosses or shots are coming in. Just positioning himself anywhere he feels more comfortable. Pioli’s main men lack tactical discipline above all. You simply cannot tell whether this team plays counter attacking football, possession football or whatever because how they play is only down to every individual starter just doing whatever your skillset can do best and blend that together for any playing style it may eventually produce. That’s why the team plays differently with different players and we think the subs can’t play football. The problem however is that this team have no precise playing style. Sad to see big talents like Leao and Theo not getting the right discipline and instructions to be able to give more. They both work more collectively with their national team.

      1. This. 100%. Everyone would actually perform better if everyone worked as a team and with actual tactics (and not rely on individuals doing their own things).

  2. Yeah but we need an upgrade of him, while stepping up the other departments if we want to get back to our highest standards
