Serafini: Inter and Juve’s mercato superiority over Milan a media-created ‘illusion’

By Isak Möller -

During the summer, many have talked about the reinforcements at Inter and Juventus, as well as the lack of them at AC Milan. However, the reality is actually very different, which Luca Serafini has pointed out.

Milan have been somewhat criticised for the lack of business this summer as many expected more after the Scudetto season. However, that doesn’t mean that the current season will be a disappointing one – making such a statement would be ignorant.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, MilanTV pundit Luca Serafini highlighted a very important point. This entire summer, the Italian media has described Inter and Juventus as the strong teams mainly thanks to their signings on the mercato.

In fact, in many outlets, Milan’s ‘lack of signings’ has been used as more or less the only argument in ruling them out for the Scudetto. It’s a strange way to look at it, especially if you consider the money actually spent.

The Rossoneri have paid €40m this summer (including the buy-outs) and they have also made investments for the youth academy. Roma and Juventus, on the other hand, have almost only done business with free agents or with loan formulas.

The money spent by Juventus on Bremer and Kostic came from the hefty sale of De Ligt (which someone, at some point, must question given his qualities). Inter, meanwhile, made a crazy deal with Chelsea (paying €10m for a loan for Lukaku) and the rest are loans or free transfers.

To say that Milan haven’t spent money, therefore, is foolish and it’s a storyline that fits the media just because the Rossoneri haven’t made signings just to amuse the fans. But rather, they have made targeted investments to continue the path that brought them the Scudetto (which was also a surprise to the media).

  1. Italian media is a joke when you consider their bias towards Milan… especially when a team does not impress them dey talk negatively

    1. Just put CDK or Origi there. They actually played at RW before.

Nb: Messias wasn’t RW before joining Milan last season.

    1. We didn’t get any replacement for Hakan on the last summer and didn’t get any replacement for Kjaer on the last winter, yet we did just fine. There won’t be another RW once we decided to buy Messias. Would be great to get a decent mid that shares the similar characteristic with Kessie. But the team collectivity is what this Milan is all about and hopefully will still be the key on this round of season.

      1. Which also means we lost Romagnoli but get Kjaer back this summer.

That being said, should Milan do not sign another CB this summer and then lost a CB due to another long term injury, winter reinforcement is mandatory.

  2. Inter is crap too. Lukaku probably good and onana takes time to judge. but overall is c minus “if” according Real Inter Standard. Not thohir or Suning Standard.

  3. We have added some CF depth..signed our next superstar #90 and got Adli in the middle. Now we need a CB in the mercato but even if we don’t Kjaer and Gabbia are back up…if we get Onana then it’d be a reasonable mercato. We have been careful in transfers and that’s how we won Scudetto.
Media hyped Inter, Naples and Juve last summer too but I try our scouting and coaching

  4. We have 4 new and exciting players that wasnt with us last year
    Pobega
    Origi
    Adli
    CDK…..
So that isnt a lack of signings…..but we have so much holes to plug it will take time

  5. The media got excited with the old fart Di Maria joining Juve, and then getting injured, and cripple Dybala going to Roma, before being crippled for a month. It’s the arrival of new stars in the league that should and needs to be celebrated.

    1. Did you remember some people in here cursing Maldini because he didn’t get Dybala and Di Maria?

But turns out Maldini was right with Dybala and Di Maria injury prone. Both players demands high salary but less playing time.

        1. Not just Juve but most big serie-a club are stuck in the past.

That’s why i salute Maldini who brave enough to change and took the risk for doing different with Milan. But some Milan fans didn’t respect and acknowledged Maldini efforts which is sad.

  6. Lol Inter spent a lot to bring Lukaku back and what they did is got beaten to a bloody pulp 3-1 by Lazio 😂😂😂

  7. Real Madrid has been careful with signings for some time now but they are still Europe’s team to beat. Sometimes targeted signing is the way to go. They won the league and champions league but they made only one good signing. Barca has been signing different players but still, they are an average team. Liverpool has made only one notable signing, same with man city because they already have a team. So if Kessie left and no backup but remember that last season he didn’t play that role. What we lack last season was CAM and we got one. With Adli, pobega coming in we are good to go. With Kjaer fit and Kalulu and Tomori who is not injury prone and Kjaer and Gabbia as backup, we ain’t lacking anything. I heard inter was beaten to a stupor by Lazio. 3:1 was the score. Thank God we have left old talented men for talented young boys. We are a blend of youth with old men.

    1. @kelvin, you’re right about not signing a player to the gallery or to impress, but there at hand. Is true about Kisses not playing his natural position last season but equally used as CAM and his initial position been covered by Bennacer and Tonali depending on the formation to play. With other players to play in similar role then we have no problem with that. We now have natural CAMs in CDK, Adli and others. Forgot Milan!
