Sky: Giroud, Loftus-Cheek, Guendouzi, Pedro – the many sub-plots of Lazio-Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

The game between Lazio and AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow night is one that is full of interesting narratives and sub-plots regarding the past and present.

As Sky write, Milan – who boast more Champions League titles than anyone in Italy – have never won the Europa League and the one pushing for it is Olivier Giroud, who instead lifted that trophy in 2019 by also scoring in the final.

He got the opening goal before the 2-0 by Pedro, who plays for the Rossoneri’s next opponents Lazio. It was Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea which defeated Matteo Guendouzi’s Arsenal, both of whom are with the capital club now.

Pedro equalised the first leg of the semi-final with an assist from Ruben Loftus-Cheek against Eintracht Frankfurt, who took the lead through Luka Jovic. The two, now team-mates, also scored in the return leg, pushing the match to penalties.

There are continuous entanglements, so many that it is difficult to untangle them. Giroud and Loftus-Cheek will start against the Biancocelesti, with Guenzouzi and Pedro on the other side as opponents before they face Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Stefano Pioli took Lazio to the Europa League already in his first year, the best in terms of goals and assists for Felipe Anderson. It was 2014-15, the season in which Pioli launched Cataldi, who started for the first time against Milan.
