TMW: Milan defender to join Villarreal on a season-long loan – the latest

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are closing in on the signing of Samuel Chukwueze and in their talks with Villarreal, Matteo Gabbia was also brought up. In fact, the defender is expected to join the Spanish side on a dry loan, a report claims.

Milan have been working on the arrival of Chukwueze for quite some time and it appears the two clubs have reached an agreement in principle. The Rossoneri are expected to pay around €28m, including bonuses, and the winger’s arrival is imminent.

As reported by TMW (via SempreMilan.it), Villarreal expressed their interest in Gabbia during the negotiations with Milan and the latter’s willingness to send him on loan unblocked the Chukwueze talks as well.

Furlani and Co. don’t want to let Gabbia leave on a permanent basis and the formula should thus be a dry loan, per the report. Frosinone and Genoa are also interested in the centre-back but Villarreal are the clear frontrunners.

      1. Gabbia should be sold. He’s not good enough. He can’t even break into the starting lineup and now Thiaw and Kalulu are ahead of him.

So there’s no point in keeping him around. Sell him and reinvest in another younger CB.

        1. Gabbia is underapreciated and is better than Kalulu who was awful last year at CB…. seriously he was awful. But both are young and should stay. It’s not 1v the other. We need 4 good CBs.

      2. I was thinking the same thing. Kjaer only got 1-2 more seasons in him. Then Gabbia would be 4th choice, not 5th and thus get alot more pitch time. Would be great for him with a 20-30 games season i Spain.

  1. It’s a good thing for all parties, and keeping good communications with Villarreal. They’re pretty adapt at scouting players.

And of course Gabbia will get more playing time.

  2. I like the move for him as he’ll likely get more minutes than staying here as 5th choice.

But for UEFA squad rules, that places even more emphasis on getting in a couple of Italians. Perhaps as Theo’s backup or even in midfield.

We have time I suppose, especially if / when we can offload the likes of Messias/Origi etc.

Good luck Matteo on your La Liga adventure 😀

    1. Nonono. Milan hates italians and hates that they feature so prominently in their history fo Redbird is trying their hardest to remove anything about classic milan as fast as possible. No more italians. No more stripes… and much more Redbird….

  3. Sending Gabbia on a fdry loan, means he returns next season with some good experience under his belt. Looking forward to the departure of Rebic, Messias and Balo Toure.
