TMW: Milan part of three-way Serie A battle to land Spurs midfielder

By Oliver Fisher -

Another name has emerged in AC Milan’s hunt for a new midfielder in view of the summer, and it is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg of Spurs.

According to what is being reported by TMW, the Milan management are monitoring the situation linked to Hojbjerg, a player that they know well after having faced him last season in the two-legged Champions League round of 16 tie against Tottenham.

The Dane could be the ‘ideal replacement for Franck Yannick Kessié’ as per the source, who is currently at Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia after leaving Barcelona, due to his technical and physical characteristics.

Hojbjerg’s price tag is not too high for Milan either because Spurs value the Dane at around €20m, also considering that his contract expires in June 2025.

Italy is a real option for the former Southampton and Schalke man, because the Rossoneri have in fact joined a race that already includes Juventus and also potentially Napoli.

The 28-year-old is now in his fifth season with the north London club and thus might want to try a new experience outside of the Premier League, while Simon Kjaer knows him well given he has over 70 caps for the Danish national team, which Kjaer is captain of.

Last night, we published a feature regarding Milan’s plans for the midfield including the current combinations and what might constitute the missing piece of the jigsaw.

    1. I think it was you who suggested us buying him yesterday or something and as a dane i would argue that he is definitely one of the danish players i wouldn’t mind seeing in red and black. He is a leader on the pitch and locker room and is rarely injured. Speaks several languages and therefore probably would make a fairly easy transition into the club. He is a strong and hardworking and techincal gifted player who can both defend and attack.
My guess is that he will be sold for maybe 10-15 mil which is a reasonable price for him considering his expiring contract.

        1. Ive been following him since his bayern youth days but i think its a good spot on your behalf. Ive seen weirder things happens and it doesnt really seem like he is as much wanted at spurs as previously. He probably would have to take a small salary cut but playing for ac milan would also be a chance in a lifetime so he probably would be open to it. We will most likely also lose maybe 2-3 older players in the summer so adding a by then 29 year old experinced player would be beneficial if both giroud, kjær and mirante leaves the club. I also think that there is a great possibility that højbjerg will become the danish international captain in the coming years.

      1. Looks like it’s a “4-3-3 DM” in his scheme. Certainly a possible and fair suggestion. But I’m with you in that I think a 4-2-3-1 with an AM is the preferred formation. So Hojbjerg next to one of Bennacer/Adli/Musah/Reijnders, probably Reijnders TBH. Reijnders could also played higher up, more in a rotation with RLC (although I’d like to see Zeroli get time as the vice-RLC), leaving less competition for the sport next to Hojbjerg.

        1. Play the system that suits the players you have or change the players.
We have a whole bunch of box to box players and no true attacking midfielders.

If we signed Hojbjerg for example, there is no question that He, Bennacer (if he finds his best form) and Reijnders are our best 3 midfielders.

Bennacer is like Modric, can defend and attack, so he is best where he can do both.
Reijnders loves to run with the ball so let him at it.

Whatever happens we need someone solid at the base.

Adli be good back up for Hojbjerg, RLC and Musah can back up the other 2.
Plenty of games for everyone anyway.

If we had Kaka or Dybala I’d go for the 4231

          1. “Bennacer is like Modric, can defend and attack, so he is best where he can do both”

Nope. Benny is useless up front. He scores one goal a season and gives maybe 1-3 assists. He isn’t a creative player. Please don’t compare him to Modric. It’s embarrassing.

          2. @bb

Bennacer won player of the tournament at AFCON playing as a Mezzala. He had joint highest number of assists in the tournament.
Last season for us he played AM in the 2nd half of the season and was superb, including scoring in CL against Napoli.
So yes he can play anywhere in midfield, he is tenacious, tackles, dribbles, assists and scores – so while he is not a Modric level, it is a comparison of type
This is why I prefer to see him as a Mezzala where he can attack and defend. Sure he is not the best defensive midfielder in the world nor is he the best AM, but he is good at both phases

    2. Yes that would be a very nice, balanced midfield!!
Benny and TJ will have the freedom to do what they do best and the defence will have protection..
Hojbjerg or Amrabat would seem very well suited. Also they are experienced and shouldn’t be expensive entering last year of contracts.
The club needs to get it done, no excuses

  1. This could be a very nice addition, he will bring energy, stability and experience to this team, plus he is also technical.
