Report claims Maldini is very tempted by Mönchengladbach star with expiring deal

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are interested in signing Borussia Mönchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram whose contract expires at the end of the season, a report claims.

Il Romanista reports how the Rossoneri ownership have stressed the need to keep costs under control to help continue the resurgence of the accounts, but this summer at least one signing will be needed to reinforce the attack.

That is where Mönchengladbach’s Thuram comes into the equation. The deal is attractive to Paolo Maldini because – despite the player’s market value being around €40m – the 25-year-old will be available for free given his contract expires in June.

However, Bayern Munich have long had their eyes on the Frenchman and could make their own move, though for now they seem to be mostly focused on other objectives ahead of the summer.

Thuram has scored 13 times in 21 appearances across the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, and he could be a long-term option for the No.9 role for the Rossoneri given his age but also his experience. Given Olivier Giroud is 36 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic is 41, some help for the attack could serve well.

  1. Agreed. But Thurman will likely command 6M/season (especially without a club having to pay a transfer fee) – so of course we will miss out on a promising player in an area of need yet again.

    1. Perhaps, but if Leao doesn’t sign his contract offer (which is likely) maybe that budget can be used to sign Thuram. Leao will then be sold and Chaka Traore can then be promoted for LW.

      1. Chaka traore has an expring contract this summer so lets see if he actually stays beyond this season but i certainly hope so.
In regard of salary i wouldnt set my hopes up too high in regard of signing thuram either but maybe if we save on the spending wallet and gets some free agents that money that should have been invested in the market can instead be invested in salaries instead, It could be problematic though in regard of players already in the fold also demanding higher salaries but just a thought.
Getting thuram would without doubt be a boost but half of europe will propably try to sign him so it might be too difficult to persuade him unless he actually wants to play in italy but the player himself seems to take his time as there were reports that chelsea tried to get him in january but he refused an early move.

        1. Yeah, I think Bakayoko is earning like 2.5m or something. So offloading that is huge. Not renewing Traore would be ridiculous considering Leao’s situation. Thuram was born in Italy and his dad made his name there, so I think there may be some affinity.

          1. In regard of thuram, that is what im hoping for and he would be a star player for us compared to maybe joining some other teams where he might end up as a bench player.
Bakayoko leaving that could help there as well, absolutely 😀
I wasnt really trying to say that we wouldnt want to renew traore but the kid got his serie a debut for pama in 20/21 season so who knows if he will keep waiting if another sere a team comes calling promising a spot in the 1rst team. Hopefully the plans of his debut has been clarified for him and its right around the corner with a long term renewal on top of that as the kid seems to have a great talent.

    2. Hopefully we can sell players like Rebic, Messias, Toure, and even Origi to make rooms for his salary. But then again, there’s no hope if Bayern enter the chat. Seems like every top Bundesliga players would love to join them in an instant.

      1. Nobody is going to spend money on Origi. If Leao doesn’t renew it would be folly to sell Rebic. We have Traore, but need depth/experience. By that same token Origi can and has played on the left. So if Thuram comes in Origi might have to play on the left, otherwise we’ll have another Bakayoko on our hands. Again, same with Toure. Let him go and you have to spend money on a replacement. Perhaps one can be found in the academy? Our youth players need to be given more opportunities.

  2. Basically Milan should offer more money than others which seems hard. But I’m sure the salary money could be sorted by asking some deadwood to leave? Certain Origi? I’m sure he would find a different club if we told him it just isn’t working and he won’t play and there you have, 4M extra. Unfortunately, this is all wishful thinking…

    1. Yes, wishful thinking, but Origi may have some use at LW if Leao is sold. See my comment above. Traore is an interesting prospect, but he may well not be ready to shoulder the full burden at LW. So if Leao leaves we’ll have to make LW work between Origi, Leao and Traore.
