CorSport: Romagnoli must be replaced – the three centre-backs Milan are targeting

By Oliver Fisher -

Alessio Romagnoli’s departure means that AC Milan are in need of a signing for the centre-back department and there are three names on their wish list, a report claims.

According to this morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews), Japhet Tanganga is in Milan’s orbit and they believe him to be an ideal profile available under the right conditions. Talks with Tottenham for the 23-year-old Englishman are ongoing, but if no agreement is found there are two alternative targets in mind.

If the Spurs defender did not come then Milan would be ready to turn to Abdou Diallo of Paris Saint-Germain or to Evan N’Dicka of Eintracht Frankfurt, who are 26 and 22 years of age respectively.

For the former it would have to be a season-long loan deal, while the latter would cost around €15-20m despite the fact that his contract with the Bundesliga club will expire at the end of the next season.

  1. Evan N’D8cka. That’s a no-brainer. Hope Frankfurt can give him to Milan, following the good relationship involving Hauge, as well as Andre Silva and Ante Rebic.

  2. Milan start last season with 4 center-backs:
    Kjaer, Tomori, Romagnoli, and Gabbia

Milan end last season with 4 center-backs:
    Tomori, Kalulu, Romagnoli, and Gabbia

    Now Milan have 4 center-backs:
    Tomori, Kalulu, Kjaer, and Gabbia

At winter Kalulu replace Kjaer, now at summer Kjaer replace Romagnoli.

Who still need to be replaced? A precious academy product which is needed by Milan?

    1. The goal is to get Gabbia at the next level, so that when Kjaer is not renewed (possibly at the end of this season, if his injury is hampering his performances) Gabbia can become third option. To do so, Gabbia needs more playing time hence the reason for his “possible” move to Sampdoria.

Also no young player with any ambitions wants to stay at the same level, so it’s likely he’s asking to be loaned if he’s 4th choice.

If we get Ziyech or Sanches, it’s unlikely we’ll loan Gabbia since any other central defender would need to take a slot in the lists.

    2. Gabbia will be loaned to other club while his place replaced by academy CB . So basically CB on risk , kjaer old and injury ACL .you cannot expect kalulu tomori fit every match and rotate them with kjaer

    3. But this season Milan will play UCL in the second part of the season too. That’s like 4-7 matches more than last season. 😉

  3. Should’ve just brought Acerbi if he’s willing to be a squad rotation player. Think we need exp more than young talent at the back, alreday have enough of those. Acerbi for a quick fix, buy someone better in a year or two

    1. That’s not a catastrophically bad strategy as the next young, long-term CB needs to be world-class and being too hasty now might get us an expensive flop. (Altought it seems that N’Dicka would be far from a flop. Not so sure about the PSG-guy though…)

Delaying the CB selection to next summer MIGHT be a good idea IF we qualify for UCL and manage to make a profit for the first time this millennium. Too many IFs though. And we need a world-class striker next summer as well and those guys are REEEEEEEEEEALLY expensive.
