Bennacer says ‘nothing is impossible’ in regard to Champions League glory

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer has said that nothing is impossible when it comes to the Rossoneri’s chances of winning the Champions League this season.

Speaking during an interview with UEFA ahead of the second leg against Tottenham Hotspur (via Milan News), the Algerian midfielder refused to suggest Milan are just making up the numbers in the latter stages of the Champions League.

“Although we know it will be very difficult, nothing is impossible,” Bennacer said when asked if Milan can go all the way.

He also talked about how there needs to be more progression from the team and the club after they secured a long-awaited Scudetto last season.

“I see where we were three years ago and where we are now. Logically, this club still has to go further. Personally, that’s what I want. It’s also what we want as a group. When we see the goals we had three years ago, we talked about returning to the Champions League in the next three years. Our goal was to be in the top four, we even managed to win the Scudetto. When you work hard, you get results. We have to do more,” he said.

Bennacer was also asked about the influence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the team and on him personally. The midfielder stressed the importance of his leadership and other harsh standards that he puts in place for everyone.

“I’m very happy to have a leader like that. He always wants everyone to go beyond their limit, no mistakes are allowed from anyone. That is also an ingredient of our success over the years. Then personally, we get along very well. He gives me a lot of advice, he’s a really good person. I am proud to share the dressing room with him,” Bennacer explained.

This has been the first season where Bennacer has occasionally worn the captain’s armband, showing how much Stefano Pioli values his leadership and contribution.

“It’s a great honour. When you wear the armband you have to be an example on and off the field,” he said.
