Bournemouth loanee Begovic discusses lockdown life, his Milan team-mates and future plans

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have continued the trend of getting to know a bit more about players behind the scenes, and this time it is the turn of Asmir Begovic.

The goalkeeper arrived on loan from Bournemouth until the end of the season following the departure of Pepe Reina to Aston Villa, and he started the most recent Serie A game for the Rossoneri – a 2-1 home defeat to Genoa behind closed doors.

Begovic was asked a number of questions by Rossoneri supporters during a Q&A session with MilanLive kindly transcribing the questions and his responses, which we have translated below…

How are the home workouts going?

“Very well. I try to keep myself as busy as possible, training myself between running, exercise bike and gym. And also with the team in conference call. I want to be ready for how long we will go back to training together,” he said.

What are your hobbies at home?

“I spend a lot of time with my family, with my children. I play some golf in the backyard, read, podcasts. We try to concentrate our energies in different things.”

How was your debut against Fiorentina?

“It was great, playing for Milan is a great honor and a source of pride. It was a difficult game, with a little more luck we could win. It was a great honor for me to make my debut with the Rossoneri and I will never forget it.”

Where do you imagine yourself in ten years?

“Hard to say, I will probably have quit even if I try to play ten more years. I will do something different, I will start a new chapter in my life, I will study the various possibilities and we will see what the best solution will be.”

Who is the strongest player you have met?

“I played against very strong players, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of the strongest I have met, physically he is very strong and he is certainly among the strongest I have played against.”

What do you think about the resumption of the season?

“When we get back on the pitch we will all be very charged, it may be different, with or without fans we don’t know, but everyone misses football after such a long break and it would be nice to go back to a normal life, hopefully, and play together with the my mates.”

What do you miss about football?

“I really miss the fans, the matches, my team-mates, the atmosphere of the games, everything. As I said, it was a long, forced break, and we can’t wait to get back to playing as soon as possible.”

Who are the five strongest goalkeepers in the world?

“Difficult question: there are many strong goalkeepers and I could forget a few, but I would say Marc-André ter Stegen, Jan Oblak, Gigio Donnarumma, Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois/”

Funniest team-mates?

“Good question, we have nice personalities in the team: Samu Castillejo and Theo Hernández are fun, but also Ibrahimovic and Ante Rebic. We have a lot of funny guys, we try to keep a fun atmosphere every day.”

What was it like playing without fans against Genoa at San Siro?

“It was very strange, it was difficult, it never happened to me. If we are to continue doing this, perhaps we will be prepared. But it was very strange, we love our fans and it is very important for us to play in front of them.”

What is your relationship with Rade Krunic?

“He is a great player, we have known each other for a few years and it was nice that he was there to welcome me: when I arrived at Milan he helped me settle in. He is a beautiful person and a great player. I’m lucky to have him as a friend.”
