GdS: Calabria close to return – Pioli has a new role in mind for the captain

Davide Calabria is getting close to making his return to action and Stefano Pioli already has a role in mind for him in the 3-4-2-1 system, a report claims.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) writes that the squad will resume training today at Milanello after two days of rest given by Pioli, and Calabria is expected to rejoin the team at the latest by tomorrow.

The captain has not played since 10 February in the 1-0 win over Torino and there are some question marks about the role he will take up when he is back, given that in the aforementioned game he came off the bench to replace Alexis Saelemaekers in the right wing-back spot, one now owned by Junior Messias.

However, the feeling is that Pioli will use Calabria more as the right-sided centre-back in his 3-4-2-1 thus guaranteeing an alternative to Pierre Kalulu, who is playing pretty much non-stop at the moment.

Calabria’s previous history in that position can be useful and while he would be seen less in the opposing half, the new Milan have new mechanisms and the great performance against Atalanta demonstrated how the team has returned to attacking with fluidity, defending from the front and controlling the pace of the game.
