GdS: Calabria close to return – Pioli has a new role in mind for the captain

By Oliver Fisher -

Davide Calabria is getting close to making his return to action and Stefano Pioli already has a role in mind for him in the 3-4-2-1 system, a report claims.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) writes that the squad will resume training today at Milanello after two days of rest given by Pioli, and Calabria is expected to rejoin the team at the latest by tomorrow.

The captain has not played since 10 February in the 1-0 win over Torino and there are some question marks about the role he will take up when he is back, given that in the aforementioned game he came off the bench to replace Alexis Saelemaekers in the right wing-back spot, one now owned by Junior Messias.

However, the feeling is that Pioli will use Calabria more as the right-sided centre-back in his 3-4-2-1 thus guaranteeing an alternative to Pierre Kalulu, who is playing pretty much non-stop at the moment.

Calabria’s previous history in that position can be useful and while he would be seen less in the opposing half, the new Milan have new mechanisms and the great performance against Atalanta demonstrated how the team has returned to attacking with fluidity, defending from the front and controlling the pace of the game.

      1. He hasn’t played a semi decent game since season 2020/2021 Ha was either injured, recovering from an injury or just garbage last two seasons.

He probably would have been doing much better if he didn’t get injured and if he didn’t need a leg transplant every 2 months.

          1. This is what I love about these boards, if you don’t have a way to backup your claims and you refuse to accept facts, just insult people and no one will notice you don’t have a leg to stand on.

  1. He lacks the height for a centre back role, the best thing is to utilize him in the right wing position, for all the hype Messias is recieving , that position is not his, it’s better for a right footed player, who can easily cross and defend, I would love to see him against Perisic, that is when we will see his limitations, first as a left footed player, then as a makeshift solution.

  2. Nooo. Damnn. He just found his place (bench) and don’t play him. His twin (Tonali) should also be benched. This lazy tonali always kicks the ball randomly to opponents and even worst, he is the free kick taker.

  3. They should give the captaincy to ibra. My reasoning: 1 he is the real captain anyway 2 every time we give a decent player the captaincy they start to play like crap, romagnoli and same with Calabria. Calabria really has been crap ever since he got the captaincy, he was good before, just end it. This home grown hero being captain is pretty poor reasoning imo. Give it to a real leader. Remember when romagnoli shushed his critics after scoring and ibra was like what r u doing? That sequence showed who was the real leader, and also showed WHY ibra should be the leader 3 it will also keep ibra more involved when he’s injured. Why no one is talking about our losing streak ending the moment he stepped on the bench is beyond me

  4. I don’t know about that one Mr. Pioli.
If Kalulu is getting rested than I’ll rather either have Thiaw move to the right and Kjaer slotted in the middle, or just play Gabbia on the right.
Calabria is too small to play as a CB, unless Pioli is switching to 4 in the back, to at least give Kalulu a break, who has played the most of any our player this season. Kalulu played in every game so far

    1. Same here. He did well when he had to play in the midfield. He has good position, tactical awareness, and enough skillset to play as DM.

    1. You don’t have to mock him but he has been terrible defensively and it’s no coincidence that the team has looked so much better with him out. He just doesn’t fit into this new system. Not a CB and doesn’t have the offensive skills to play wingback.

        1. Shiva is an ass that knows ball and doesn’t feel the need to insult people because he is threatened by facts. He just makes a factual statement and fanboys start crying in terror.

  5. No offense to Calabria, but “if it ain’t broke, then don’t try to fix it” when it comes to our back three. Kalulu/Thiaw/Tomori are sound and solid at the back.
