Capello refuses to pick a Scudetto favourite as he analyses Milan’s strengths

By Oliver Fisher -

Former Rossoneri coach Fabio Capello spoke about the current situation AC Milan have found themselves in and their hopes to bring home the Scudetto.

Last season Rossoneri led the Serie A table for over 20 rounds of but could never shake off rivals Inter, who ended up surging in front as Milan continued to slip up. This time around Milan have clung on to top spot for longer and with eight games left there is belief that they can go on and win it.

Capello is a man who knows what it takes to win Serie A given his success with the Diavolo spoke during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport about whether Milan are made of the right stuff to go on and win the league this season given the competition from Inter, Napoli and now also Juventus who are putting together an excellent run.

“The favourite? None, at the moment there are four teams fighting with a 25 percent chance of winning,” he said (via SempreMilan.it).

On Allegri’s Juve: “Allegri is an intelligent man and lets the team play as best he can. I don’t understand all these criticisms for the fact they win 1-0 a lot.”

On Inter: “Another exaggeration. I don’t see a downed team. Inter will recover, but a lot will depend on Sunday’s match against Juve. A draw would be a defeat for both of them, so I think the coaches will play it with the weapons they have.

“Juve being behind in the standings will have to risk more, but not even Inter can afford a draw. Distances are minimal. And in the Scudetto fight let’s not forget Napoli, a very good team: they have grown a lot and have a coach who knows where to take them.”

On the coach best suited for the sprint: “I would say Allegri: part of the run-up since he is behind and has less weight on his shoulders. The weight on the back is carried by others.”

On Milan: “First of all, he has the advantage of being light-hearted, this is the key. Milan is a team that conveys joy and is led by a coach who is doing an excellent job. But like all young groups it can have ups and downs. Watch out for the calendar, which is not easy.

“Milan are exalted in the big matches. Logical for a youth-based team. Every coach knows that when the matches are important there is little to say: the motivations come by themselves. But then you have to keep your concentration always. It’s like all teams where there are many young players. The joy of the game is their strong point. But among the four in the fight they seem to me the most enigmatic.”

On the balance of the league: “At the international level we are not there, only Atalanta – who are not among the four in the fight for the Scudetto – proved to be competitive. We have to change the pace of the game: for now we are fast slowly and there is no need. You have to take the German model, retrieve the ball and play it immediately forward. The qualities to do this are there.”
