Reports: Cardinale wants 70k+ stadium in Sesto San Giovanni but elections are crucial

By Oliver Fisher -

One of the main missions for RedBird Capital after buying AC Milan is to construct a brand new stadium to take the club into a new era.

As reported this morning by Tuttosport (via MilanNews), Gerry Cardinale – the founder and leading man of RedBird – seems to be willing to get straight into the new stadium project and is happy for the Rossoneri to build one alone, thus abandoning the joint project with Inter.

In particular, Cardinale seems drawn to the area of Sesto San Giovanni and the site of the old Falck steelworks. The desire is to build a stadium with at least 70,000 seats, and to give Milan a state of the art new home.

However, Calciomercato.com report that Milan are following the development of the elections in Sesto San Giovanni and there will be a vote today. The citizens of the area must vote on whether they want to keep the mayor Roberto Di Stefano or elect Michele Foggetta in his place.

The choice is very important from a Milan point of view because Di Stefano staying in charge would ensure the green light is still there for the plans to materialise, while Foggetta has already made it clear that he does not consider the new stadium a priority for the area of Sesto.
