CM: Frattesi flattered but honoured his word – the background on Milan’s attempt

By Oliver Fisher -

Davide Frattesi has become one of the early stars of Luciano Spalletti’s Italy reign, and he could have been an AC Milan player had things gone slightly differently over the summer.

Frattesi scored a brace against Ukraine last night which gave the Azzurri their first victory of the Spalletti era and removed the doubts and negativity that were present after the draw with North Macedonia.

Now, it’s time for him to return to Inter’s disposal, and to start preparing for the derby against Milan scheduled for Saturday evening, a match that is not like any other and has an extra meaning for Frattesi given what he experienced during the last summer.

Calciomercato.com recall that Frattesi was the centre of a lot of rumours and enquiries too, with Inter, Milan, Juventus, Roma and also Napoli – all the main teams in Serie A – battling to sign him from Sassuolo. There were offers coming from the Premier League too.

However, the 24-year-old chose early on to remain in Italy to continue his growth. Inter moved first out of the clubs listed and they moved strongly, to the extent Frattesi was determined to join the Nerazzurri.

However, when Steven Zhang’s club stalled, Milan tried to make a decisive move after selling Sandro Tonali. There were several meetings with Frattesi’s entourage, including a lunch to try and gauge if they could steal him from their cousins.

It was not successful. Despite being flattered by the strong interest from the Rossoneri, his choice had been made, and now he wants to make Milan feel some regret for not moving earlier.
