CM: Bennacer too important for this Milan as management begin sweating over release clause

By Oliver Fisher -

Technical director Paolo Maldini is thinking about Ismael Bennacer’s release clause after the midfield made an impressive return last night.

As Calciomercato.com writes, Milan have lost only one game with Bennacer starting since the start of the season in Serie A and that came against Spezia in one of the worst collective performances since January 2020. This season, the Rossoneri have ended up with 8 wins and 3 draws when the Algeria international has started and he made his comeback last night after a period of absence, and he showed Milan what they have been missing.

Pioli heaped praise upon him after the game: “Without taking anything away from Tonali or Meité, Bennacer has characteristics that go perfectly with the way we play. We are happy with his return, now he will answer the call from Algeria but he will only play one game and I think it will do him good.”

Under contract until 2024, the former Arsenal and Empoli midfielder has a €50million release clause which will kick in this summer. The economic difficulty which has gripped football means that hardly anyone can pay such a sum, but even still the management will speak with the player’s entourage to avoid nasty surprises as Bennacer is ‘too important for this Milan’.
