CM: Consigli the new name in Milan’s GK pursuit – why he ticks several boxes

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper and the list of candidates is growing, because Andrea Consigli has also appeared as an option.

As Calciomercato.com report, the injury suffered by Marco Sportiello during the tour of the United States has changed the transfer plans, because the cut on his left hand will force the former Atalanta goalkeeper to miss at least two months and might yet need surgery.

Lorenzo Torriani has been promoted to third choice after having performed well in the friendlies against Rapid Wien and Manchester City, but he is still seen as being too young at 19 years of age to be the deputy Mike Maignan even if just for a couple of months.

The Milan management are looking at various options and Andrea Consigli has been offered to them after Sassuolo’s relegation to Serie B. The 37-year-old would not be expensive, would help with the squad list regulations and has put a move to Monza on pause because he wants the Rossoneri.

Consigli joins an already long list of candidates including Simone Scuffet, the first name explored by Milan who would cost around €3m, as well as Loris Karius and Rui Patricio who have also been proposed, but there is a desire to focus on an Italian profile.

  1. If we lost 2nd goalkeeper for 3-4 months then the 3rd goalkeeper should be ready at the bench. Why do we need another? Do we not trust our academy product?

    1. “Do we not trust our academy product?” Not they do not. They never do. It’s why some of them are leaving. We had a CB crisis and didn’t use the CBs we had available. That should be enough to tell those kids about the level of trust management has in them.

Torriani is tall, seems to have decent footwork but more importantly stop shotting ability. And he’s been training well with the team whole pre. So why not use him 🤷‍♂️

  2. A young GK with a chance to be starter is a recipe for disaster. Not everyone can be a Dollarumma. Consigli would be a welcome addition

  3. Not sure why we’re looking to pick up another GK when Mike hasn’t come back yet and we have Lapo Nava who can cover as a back up (not even a starter) for a couple of months …

  4. Makes absolutely no sense for me to hire a new GK because our substitute will not be on the bench for the first 2 months of the season. That’s why we have a second and third substitute.

    1. No, that’s why they are 2nd or 3rd. They are not considered good enough or ready yet to be counted on if the starter goes down. The 3rd string keeper is there for emergency purposes only.

      1. I would agree with you if both Mike and Sportielo are off the field, but our main GK hasn’t even started pre-season and is in perfectly good health. Having another GK in our team means the young guys are as good as gone – they literally have minimal chances of having 1st team minutes as it is. If Mike gets injured, so be it, give them chance to rise to the occasion. Otherwise, why are they on our payroll at all.

        1. Sportielo is out, for several months. And as for Maignan, how many times has he been hurt, he has a history of missing games. You can’t start the season with both backups being inexperienced teenagers knowing they might have to be the starter. You need that safety net of someone who has already proven themself at a high level. Are Consigli or Scuffet the second coming of Buffon, no, but they are a safe choice in case they are needed. Both would also fill an important Italian spot on the quota lists.

          1. Let’s agree to disagree. If they can’t theoretically join the team for a few games as starters because they lack so much experience, then you don’t need them at all. Lapo Nava is 20yo, Torriani is 19 yo, they are not Donnaruma, but they are way more experienced than he was when he joined the 1st team. I’m sure we will be fine with them for a few games, should we need their services.
