CM: The four reasons Milan decided against signing a defender in January

By Oliver Fisher -

It was probably to be expected given the absence of any concrete rumours, but AC Milan had a quiet deadline day and only completed a couple of loan exits.

As Calciomercato.com report, there is some surprise that the winter mercato seemed to drift by for Milan, without the acquisition of a central defender that even Stefano Pioli publicly stated that he wanted.

The decision had already been made before the match against Bologna after some deep reflections on several points regarding the situation at the start of the mercato versus that towards the end.

The first concerns the positive signs from Matteo Gabbia and the upcoming returns of Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw, which somewhat reduced the urgency to get another player in.

Another factor that influenced was the economic one: none of the objectives explored presented favourable conditions, and there was no desire just to do business for the sake of it.

Then, the eliminations from the Coppa Italia and the Champions League shifted the objectives of the season towards qualifying for the next UCL and trying to go on a Europa League run, with the Scudetto out of sight.

The final reason is that there will likely be a change of head coach at the end of the season, so investing in a player that might not be the best fit for the next manager would not be wise.

  1. Maybe we just didn’t need one?

But the media must always question why there are not enough signings.

How dare Milan not give the media more content!

  2. The only reson for not buying in January is our glorious owner.Simple.Secondly…ACM leadership is 100% sure that scudetto is gone, and there is no chance of getting it in any way,and 4.-th place is as good as in pocket for next season,so,no need for extra spendings.Instead ,we sent several players ofload, and get Gabbia back from loan. It’s all about love, oops, pardon me,about money.Uefa league?I think nobody in Casa Milan counts with getting that trophy.I wish I am wrong

  3. I understand not over-paying for another CB but we do have a very congested schedule coming up about the Napoli game next weekend. Can we rely on Kjaer to be fit? If he needs to sit a game can Terraciano step in or will Pioli finally trust Simic? I think we’ll be fine in the long-run once Thiaw is back and then the others, but have to get through this patch first.

  4. First they don’t want to spend money
    Second who cares about Pioli
Third we are good as third place for many years
Fourth we don’t need any trophy
Fifth we are keep on selling the stars from the team
Sixth we keep on signing bad to mediocre players and of course free transfer or at max 20m

  5. Spending millions is easier said than done. Finding a good defender is hard because almost nobody is willing to sell good players in the middle of the season. Those rare ones who can be bought in January are either in poor form or expensive. Milan have several CBs so spending millions to add another one does not make sense. Instead, money should be spent on a defensive mildfielder and a striker.

  6. 1. Didn’t have the money.

    2. Didn’t have the money.

    3. Didn’t have the money.

    4. We don’t think Conte would want that guy.

  7. Do you people know how to count? The owners spent over €100 million in the summer. How are you complaining about them being cheap? You’re complete and utter idiots. We already have Barteshagi and Simic for over and Tamori, Thaw and Kalulu are due back this month so, other than to take away a spot for the boys from the Primavera, signing another defender was unnecessary.

      1. This is the first time in many years that the club are debt free. They sold a player and spent MORE than the fee they received for him. You don’t understand what being cheap actually means. Fans like you are embarrassing. You post the type of drivel a children would share in playgrounds. As has already been explained, there was no need whatsoever to bring in anymore defenders.

  8. Honestly I don’t know the reasons the management decided against buying any player (and I’m pretty sure they are either not good reasons or stingy reasons), but I’m not unhappy about it.
As much as I complain about the current AC Milan, I don’t think going into a buying spree is going to solve the problem. I said multiple times that we already have many CBs even with the loaning of Pellegrino (Tomori, Thiaw, Kjaer, Gabbia, Kalulu, Simic and even Theo actually) so getting a new one is not only unecessary but actually counterproductive. The only position I wanted to be reinforced is the defensive midfield actually.
And I’d say also this, I think even for the summer, provided we don’t sell anyone, we don’t need more than 2 or 3 new players at most.
