CM: Jonathan David back scoring – a message to Milan and Juventus

By Oliver Fisher -

There were a lot of concerns about Jonathan David’s early-season form with Lille, but he seems to have rediscovered his goal scoring touch once again.

Calciomercato.com recall that David spent only nine minutes on the pitch and scored a goal that is worth its weight in gold, equalising in the 93rd minute against Paris Saint-Germain to send another strong message to his critics.

Last season David amassed 26 goals and four assists in 40 games, but his largely negative start to the season – to the point of losing his starting place to Yusuf Yazici – made Milan fans turn up their noses at the idea of signing him as the centre-forward of the future.

He has three goals in the last four games and the one last night against PSG gave new life to the Champions League mission for Lille. There is no denying it, the many transfer rumours surrounding the Canada international and the June 2025 contract expiry are also having an impact on the choices of Fonseca.

In January, Lille will not offer discounts on the €40m requested for David. Milan are unlikely to make a move for him at that price, while Juventus are keen but there will only be margin in the event of Dusan Vlahovic’s sale.

It is a different story for next summer, when David will be a year from the expiry of his deal meaning his valuation will drop a lot. It is there that the Rossoneri could try to find an agreement by taking advantage of the excellent relations with Lille.

However, directors Geoffrey Moncada and Antonio D’Ottavio are also looking at other profiles and there will be no shortage of alternatives to the former Gent striker.
