CM: Background on how Milan beat Inter to Reijnders ahead of the derby

By Oliver Fisher -

It has already been a positive international break for Tijjani Reijnders, who made his debut for the Dutch national team, and now he hopes to continue it on Saturday.

Calciomercato.com point out that Reijnders has already become a fan favourite for many after joining in the summer from AZ Alkmaar and demonstrating his personality and quality as a starter in the first three games.

When the scouting department suggested his profile during the summer, Stefano Pioli didn’t need any more convincing and he told the management that he is the number one target to help reconstruct the midfield.

Negotiations took some time, but in the end an operation worth €20m plus bonuses was completed with AZ Alkmaar. Now, it seems all the efforts will be rewarded because Milan have a strong player in their hands with great room for growth.

Reijnders showed his ability on the European stage in the UEFA Conference League with AZ, eliminating Lazio in the knockout stages, and it was his great performance at the Stadio Olimpico that had captured the attention of Milan and Inter.

The Nerazzurri even though about launching a move for him, having held contacts with the boy’s agents which did not end up turning into a real negotiation.

Geoffrey Moncada and Antonio D’Ottavio moved quickly, Giorgio Furlani found the right meeting with AZ, overcoming the competition from Barcelona. Now, Pioli is counting on him to break the series of four derbies won in a row by Inter.
