CM: Real Madrid baptism and a big future – Milan firmly believe in Simic

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have a number of talents in the Primavera that they hope are destined for big things, with Jan-Carlo Simic certainly among them.

Calciomercato.com write how having the surname ‘Simic’ and being a centre-back evokes nostalgia, especially thinking of Dario Simic who played as a defender for Inter and Milan, making the association immediate.

Jan-Carlo plays with the Rossoneri, and at 18 he has just started writing his story but he is already impressing everyone who sees him play. He also impressed Geoffrey Moncada, who in the summer of 2022 pushed to sign him for the youth sector after watching him at Stuttgart.

It was in the German club that Simic took his first steps, in the country where he was born to a Bosnian father and a Serbian mother, before choosing Serbia as the national team to represent.

In a year and a half, Simic has convinced everyone thanks to his qualities, which also got him noticed by Stefano Pioli and the first team staff. He was given his first start in a friendly against Real Madrid, and it was a first taste of what Simic is destined for.

He is a physically strong central defender, able to play with both his right and left foot and he can also play as a full-back if needed. The Serb is a modern defence, focused on his career and very close to his family.

In the coming months his agents and Milan will choose the best path for his future, part of which already seems to be written: a career at the top level.

    1. Jan-Carlo Simic is not dario simic’s son as he is german/serbian while dario is a croat. He has two sons though Viktor Simic and Roko Simic.
But yes we are all getting old 😀

      1. Yes that’s what I meant to say they’re not related. Forgot to put that part in. I liked Simic when he played for us. Solid player.
Btw I though Dario had 3 sons? 🤔

  1. I suspect Milan will be too ambitious/impatient to ever turn these academy players into Milan players.

If we won’t trust them until they are about 21, how do we get the good ones to that age before they flee for more opportunity?

You can see it with Bartesaghi. He’s emerged 6 to 12 months too early. Now the plan is to send him on loan for playing time but we’re going to try to sign the Betis left back for depth.

So Bartesaghi will return from loan as third choice to guys with 2 to 4 years of contract and years of senior playing time ahead of him. In reality organic evolution cannot really happen in that context. It would need to be forced.

You see how much Milan rates Simic but it’s trying to sign other CBs that are 1 to 2 years older. So he’ll face the same problem.

They’ve done a great job with the academy by the look of it. There is stacks of talent there. Now they’ve got to work out how to benefit from that. There is no point identifying and developing young star players if we’re not going to cash in on sales or play them. The current model is barely going to result is sales that would cover the costs of the academy.

Milan is not a selling club. I get that. It’s too big and is trying to reclaim its place at the top of the world. So I’m not suggesting we become RB Saltzburg.

I think we need a big picture development model as we would have to if we were limited to drafting most young talent.

It would be sort of like what Real has done, signing young players before they are megastars, but starting earlier in the process.

Maybe it is possible that one day the senior team is almost exclusively academy products.

    1. Bro if you are being real with yourself and not follow the sentiment of the comments here, Simic is not really highly rated tbh. Granted he’s only played like 1.5 games in preseason but once you get past the “new” bias and the “youth product” bias you’d see he has glaring flaws especially during those games.
I’d like for youth players to succeed don’t get me wrong but he has a looooooong way to go. It’s why we’re looking for a more ready CB
