CorSport: Conceicao exit possible with Champions League or not – the reasoning

Since Sergio Conceicao joined AC Milan, things have been rather up and down, but this is a trend of the season, not him particularly.

The past two, and maybe even three, seasons have featured too many ups and downs for a club like Milan. Inconsistency has been rife and as a result, the club are now in a very difficult situation. Not only have they had three head coaches in the past 12 months, but results have not improved under any.

Paulo Fonseca’s spell, in many ways, has followed a similar path that Conceicao’s is already. A few big results dotted about, clouded by a general lack of Milanisiti spirit, and this leaves everything in the air.

Corriere dello Sport (via Milan News) even writes that frustration is surrounding the situation, and it is not just from Conceicao, but towards him too. The loss to Feyenoord in the Champions League could be the end of European dreams next season.

Even if it is not though, and the Rossoneri miraculously claim a spot in Europe’s prestige competition, the Portuguese could leave. Conceicao was left lonely after the game against Feyenoord, and talk about mistrust is growing around Milanello.

At present, the former Porto man is walking on a thread, and any movement that is too significant could be the snapping factor… there are no guarantees of safety.

  1. Too reactionary. We aren’t blaming the players who should be blamed. While Fonseca was never half as good as him and putting them in the same conversation is hideous.

  2. This would be the stupidest decision since purchase of Emerson Royal. So it is quite possible this management will decide top sack him.

  3. The owner and management needs to be kicked out. Only then the club will start winning anything. The coaches or players are not the problem.
The problem is Gerry Cardinale Red Bird

  4. I wasn’t really expecting Conceição to be able to fix the team from a tactical point of view giving the lack of preseason and the tight calendar (he never had a full week to work with the team ever since he took it), although I was hoping to see at least some improvments as the games go on, but the problem is the mental aspect.
Pioli and Fonseca are former losers, so I was expecting Conceição, a former and proven winner at Porto to at least be able to inject some of that willingless to win onto the players, but as we see right now, they either look apathic and care-free or stressed and tense, both of which are bad. If he can’t at least do that, then what’s his point ?
But is he the only one to blame in this case ? Why are professional football players, who are among the most well paid in Italy and who went through so many teams and coaches, need to be motivated again and again to take a game seriously ? I might sound too harsh, but if you’re a player who is fit you don’t need a reason to give a 100% each game. And if our players need somehow a speech before each game in the hopes that they won’t screw up, then it’s maybe getting rid of 75% or 80% of the players should be considered.

    1. “Pioli and Fonseca are former losers, so I was expecting Conceição, a former and proven winner at Porto at least”

This is a silly statement. Pioli is Scudetto winning coach. Serie A is one of the top 3 leagues in the world and possibly the most competitive. I’m sorry but Portugal is not even a top 5 league so forgive me if I’m not all impressed with his Porto trophies. Apparently it doesn’t take much tactically to win over there. Just a bunch of screaming at the players to run! He’s over his head here. Portuguese league is where he belongs.

      1. “former losers” as in prior to coming to Milan.
Pioli prior to AC Milan has never won anything. He has won a scudetto and deserves a lot of credit for that and has succeeded where his predecessors since Allegri (and currently both his successors) have failed but let’s not pretend he was a well established coach before coming to AC Milan.
La Liga Portugal Betclic isn’t a top 5 league but isn’t trash either. Many great teams purchase players from there and teams like Benfica and Porto regularly play well in Europe. Under Conceição Porto played UCL round of 16 and quarter finals on many occasions.

  5. Letting go of Conceicao will be a terrible mistake. His records has said a lot to prove his worth. So far so good, he has really been trying. The problem with Milan is the set-up. It will take time to change a trend of ups and downs that have going on for 3 years. As far as I’m certain, the current team has not played the style Conceicao is hoping to see, fast and free flow football. Feryernod exposed us of our slow game.

  6. This is the WORST leadership of Ac Milan in over 100years! Conceicao is NOT the problem, rather was Fonseca. The leadership acquired players who do not have the “Milan Mentality”.

He took a risk with the Feyernood game and the middle of the pack was exposed. Now he has to take some “damn the consequence” decisions. One of either Fofana or Rjeinders has to sit once Bondo returns.

Also Leao must be made to sit out some games too. Opponents know Milan builds about 70% of its attack from the left so once they pressure that channel, we are doomed. We need a change of plans.

Also the team doesn’t shoot! They pass the ball too much sometimes and dangerously so with the loads of back passes they make when building from the back…

Our intelligent play needs to be optimized. It’s just another bad game, we need the weekend’s game to lift our spirits and work harder to overturn the first leg loss.

    We will be fine!

  7. HE’S BETTER THAN FONSECA IN RESULT WISE, HE WON A TROPHY WITHIN A WEEK, YET YOU ARE CONPARINF HIM WITH FONSECA, HE WILL GUIDE MILAN TO TOP FOUR FINISH AND WIN A TROPHY BEFORE THE END OF THE SEASON.

  8. Lets be honest. Concecao totally messed up in Dinamo and Feenord games. If we do not turn it around he will be gone very soon and rightly so. Unfortunatly, no way the managment will understand the real problem as they are already firmly on another path. This is Milan with no values, this is Milan who does not mind benching its best player for a 6 month lonee. No italian identity, no identity at all.

  9. The only that matters is the possible change of ownership or at the very least – the three stooges getting sacked this summer. No clear football air is possible with them at the helm. Everything is toxic.

  10. Management leaving the lads to face the wrath of the fans on their own while they sneek in through the back door.

Ibra using his “Ibra tone” to force players out.

You can call Carletto, Pep or Klopp. No one will make a big difference. Attitude and performance reflect leadership. And this leadership is rotten. From the very top.

  11. Yes, let’s compare the guy that in his 6 months at the club got us to one of the worse positions in Serie A in history and Conceicao who has been at the club for less than 2 months.

  12. Utter and complete confusion all round if we are to believe this news!!!!!
But whether it is true or not there is no doubt that furlani, moncada and ibra have no clue how to manage a club like milan and are making fools not only of themselves but also of milan.
For doing a perfect job, maldini was dumped. For acting as idiots, the 3 clowns retain their positions …..
    OMG …..

    1. Sure, Maldini was doing a perfect job. Did you forget some of the duds that were signed and the players that were lost? He was sacked for Origi and CDK.

      1. What a m0r0nic comment. Maldini spent 32 millions in CDK and got Origi for free but sure they were the reason for sacking him. Then according to your logic, these 3 clowns should be hanged by their toes naked in the middle of Piazza del Duomo for wasting 250 millions and three coaches just to watch this depressed “team” sit at 8th spot? Maldini got us Scudetto, show some respect you yank Gerry bandwagoners.

  13. Wtf… give the man some time. He inherited a disfunctioning, lazy and highly undisciplined group of players from the Pioli era (where, if the left side didn’t want to track back, the system would be changed accordingly). Milan’s attitude problems are at the absolute heart of the problem and it will take at least one entire pre-season to fix. Just forget about this year and move on. I for one have faith in this coach. Milan need winners, not super models who change their hair every other week and only turn up when they feel like they want to. I loved prime Leao and Theo, but what this squad needs is consistency and eagerness. Conceicao is the best person to deliver that, and yes, unfortunately, that may require the sale of Leao and Theo. With all that money I’m sure we can find young established players who are not (yet) as good, but at least more consistent and eager.

  14. He should be at risk. He’s no different to Fonseca, he shouts and blames the players. He wasn’t known for playing great football at Porto. We have players with flair, we need a coach that plays a game that suits their abilities. Management aren’t going to waste time either, which is the one good thing they do, they act quickly.

  15. Oh yes, let’s change the coach again. How about Bonera? Or Nesta? Theo & Leao? FFS. The issue isn’t the coach. It’s the management & the attitude of so-called stars in Milan.

  16. No, no. Conceicao hasn’t even had a training window yet. It’s been matches every 3-4 days since he was hired. Crazy pace to the months of Jan & Feb.

He should stay at least through the end of the season but probably get all of 25-26 as well to work with this team.
