CorSport: Everything that doesn’t currently work in Fonseca’s Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

With AC Milan winless heading into the international break, the pens of the Italian media have been sharpened and they have begun to criticise various aspects of the club, including Paulo Fonseca.

This morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) talks about the current state of Fonseca’s Milan, who have just two points from the first nine available and are now lagging far behind Inter and Juventus already.

Milan have not started so badly in the championship since the 2011-12 season, when Massimiliano Allegri was the head coach. During that season, Milan also had two points from three games, which proved to be decisive come the end as Antonio Conte’s Juventus won the title

That Milan eventually recovered therefore to mount a Scudetto push, but the paper questions if the current one will be capable of doing so. The light at the end of the tunnel seems very far away because – after two horror games against Torino and Parma – there were only 45 good minutes vs. Lazio.

Six goals conceded in three games is already a critical number, especially when they were six goals that are essentially identical: an unchallenged run down the left, a ball into the middle and an unmarked man waiting to meet it.

It is all too easy to score against Milan, and at the other end it cannot be said that the attack shines either. The Rossoneri have scored in every game, but by developing little team play and creating few real dangers, rather relying on individual play mostly.

The break, perhaps, comes at the right time to save what can be saved, but Fonseca is under pressure because the positive signs from preseason have ultimately gone up in flames.

  1. i watched the game vs lazio 2x, milan played well, they kept losing games in my opinion bc the defense is not adapting fast enough to fonseca style of playing high and also there is a lack of chemistry due to so many new players in the squad, overall this milan team is stronger than pioli team, ppl needs to be patient instead of criticizing and complaining so damn much

    1. Agreed the team is stronger than Pioli’s, but, Pioli is a better coach than Fonseca. If you can bring back Pioli with this team you will be surprised

    2. Milan played well? Man it was atrocious. The right flank with Chukwueze and Emerson Royal was terrible. Loftus-Cheek and Reijnders were invisible. Okafor and Pulisic were mostly running nowhere. I don’t want to blame Pavlovic on the goals because he’s left on an island and he scored to rescue a poor offensive sector. Fofana needs playing time. Maignan is impressive as usual. Théo and Leao instantly changed the game, their action on the goal was amazing. Abraham was ok, on the goal he just makes a pass, he had a poor shot at the end but that’s promising.

      1. Notice that playing Pulisic away from the RW has led to an increase in goals from lw crosses, weak RBs like Calabria and Royal need a winger who puts in defensive work, which Chukweze doesn’t do. He doesn’t look as lazy as Leao on defense, but he’s equally ineffective.
