CorSport: Fofana the priority but Milan track ‘alternate solutions’ – the names

With Monaco being difficult in negotiations with AC Milan for Youssouf Fofana, the Rossoneri are being forced to look at other options for their midfield.

The Fofana saga is close to being filed under the ‘dragging’ category, if it is not already there, and there are two ways to view the situation.

Either, Milan are playing the situation correctly, safe in the knowledge that the midfielder could join next summer for free, so why pay an extortionate amount? Then, with Paulo Fonseca stating that the midfielder is the top choice, why wait around?

Whichever way the situation is viewed, the knowledge is that time is running out for the Rossoneri to add Fofana to the squad this summer, so alternate options must be looked into, with a hole still existing.

As Corriere dello Sport (via Milan News) reports, Johnny Cardoso is an option being considered, and he could cost €20-25 million this summer. Elsewhere, Manu Kone is being considered, and with the Diavolo previously interested in the player, perhaps, it is time to relight an old fire with Moncada preferring the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder as an alternative.

Ultimately, Fofana remains the first choice, but if he does not arrive this summer, an alternative must be sought.

  1. i know but cardoso for me should be the priority as i cardoso is the same price but contract isnt expiring but i agree with you we should get fofana next year

    1. Doesn’t matter if the contract expiring or not. They have the same price. It is stupid if you rely your decision for that particular reason.

  2. The fact that fofana is turning down any and every team because he only wants milan should be enough to bring him here for both ends. I can’t remember the last time a player of his caliber has turned down big teams and big money offers to come play for us. Hes already a fan favorite and he’s not even on the team lol. Bring fofana asap and get this saga over with already!

  3. Sure, everything is on Monaco although our hot shot managers knew about the conditions of potential deal since June if not earlier. But it’s Monaco who are difficult.

Should’ve abandon these negotiations weeks ago. That way we could have a proper DM already participating on trainings.

  4. Johnny Cardoso is actually a very interesting profile.
    He is only 22.
Plays for Betis, which is a very decent side.
His defensive numbers are lower than Fofana, but he’s younger and has a lot of room for improvement.
He actually beats Fofana in two very important aspects:
    1. A higher percentage of tackles in the defensive third, which makes him a more natural DM than Fofana.
    2. His passes (short mid or long range) are cleaner than Fofana.
    He’ll cost around 20-25 million, I reckon.
He’s American, since our management cares a lot about marketability in the US.

The only drawback I can think of is that we might need to be patient with him. He’ll require at least one season (possibly two) to reach Fofana’s level.
This isn’t a small thing to ask.. the DM role is very VERY critical if winning a title is an objective next season.
But if the management is still fixated on “sustainability first”, then he might actually be an even better deal than Fofana.

  5. Why not go for Matteo Prati, DM, serie A experience, young, talented, easily affordable and fits moneyball profile perfectly.
Do not understand what Moncada’s problem is when it comes to homegrown talent !!??
