Paulo Fonseca has gone from seemingly being on the verge of being sacked by AC Milan to having recorded two big wins that have cemented his place.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) recall, it was widely reported that Fonseca needed a positive result in the derby or he could lose his job after six games. However, just seven days later, Milan are second in the league, boast the title of best attack and have conceded just once in the last three league games.

Fonseca deserves credit for the turnaround. Milan are not perfect yet, but they have certainly started to shift into a higher gear and show off their potential. The Portuguese’s move was above all tactical, very courageous: he inserted four attackers in a sort of 4-2-4 that guarantees a very aggressive and effective first line of pressure.

However, it was also a move that affected his team’s mentality. After the victory against Lecce, the coach admitted that the choice to have both Alvaro Morata and Tammy Abraham play at the same time was also dictated by the energy he sees released by his eleven when the Spaniard and Englishman are on the pitch.

It is also not a coincidence that Milan are also doing better defensively, because they are conceding fewer dangerous chances due to having a higher centre of gravity. In addition to conceding just one goal in the last three games, the Rossoneri have scored nine which shows the firepower is still there.

In football you are only as good as the next performance and Fonseca knows this, having already preached calm also because now another very complicated test will arrive on Tuesday against Bayer Leverkusen who are the Bundesliga champions.
