The hypothesis of a play-off style format to finish the Serie A season is once again being considered, according to a report.
Thursday’s edition of il Corriere dello Sport (via MilanLive), Serie A is likely to be disrupted again as the Coronavirus pandemic is beginning to cause worry among the leaders of not just Italian football but in Europe too.
Therefore, the Lega and FIGC are preparing for a situation whereby COVID brings a stop to the season again, and while the first objective is always to finish the season normally, but all alternatives are being considered.
The paper adds that the idea of Scudetto play-offs could once again come back into force. The ‘first round’ of games would be played (i.e. Matchday 1-19) and the top twelve would be grouped into two groups of six teams that will compete for the title.
There would be home and away matches with the first top two going into the final. There would also be play-offs to decide relegated teams.
