CorSport: The two reasons Jonathan David remains high on Milan’s list

By Oliver Fisher -

There was a time a few months ago when Jonathan David was the main name linked with AC Milan in view of the summer, and his name might just come back into fashion.

This morning’s edition of the newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) reports that Milan will purchase at least one new striker in the summer, considering that Olivier Giroud is not expected to renew his contract and may instead sign with Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer.

The Rossoneri are following various names such as Joshua Zirkzee of Bologna, and they might try to use Alexis Saelemaekers as a counterpart in order to bring down the cash sum required. Benjamin Šeško of RB Leipzig (who has a release clause of €50m) is also on the list.

However, Geoffrey Moncada and his team have ‘not forgotten’ a name that comes back into the news every now and again, which is Lille striker Jonathan David. He was born in New York but is a Canadian international, and he has 22 goals and seven assists in 37 matches this season.

David’s contract with the Ligue 1 side will expire in June 2025 and it will not be renewed, so his asking price may drop compared to the €50m that Les Dogues asked for last year.

There are two reasons that Milan haven’t crossed David’s name off their list, therefore. One is the fact that he has returned to scoring regularly in 2024, and the second is the advantageous terms of a potential deal.

  1. I would go for him with anything around 30-35m – especially given that we will need probably 2 strikers.
But I doubt his price tag will drop that much. He has the numbers (not only from this season) to attract good interest and possibly bring 50+m offers.

  2. Reason one, he is “cheap”. Reason 2, he is “cheap”.

If anyone else tries for him, bye bye the promise striker.

We already bought Rafa from Lille to be the striker and he ended up on the lw. The same will happen with David. He cant play as single ST in Italy. I will stand by that until he comes and proves me wrong

      1. I’ll wait, but from what i gather with your comments most of the players you are for are sh!ty average at best

  3. “Bang for the Buck” seem to be David and Zee. My guess is it will come down to one of these two players.

As much as media huffs & puffs about Gyo, his price tag is over-inflated.
