CorSport: Lopetegui remains on pole for Milan but Roberto Martinez idea emerges

By Oliver Fisher -

With the news that AC Milan are no longer convinced by the idea of hiring Julen Lopetegui, a new name has entered the frame as a possible alternative option.

This morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) talks about who will replace Stefano Pioli at the end of the season, claiming that the number one candidate remains Lopetegui even if there has been widespread discontent at the idea.

The Spaniard has already met the technical director Geoffrey Moncada twice and laid the foundations for a three-year agreement, talking about the squad and how it can be moulded into one able to win the league.

The paper confirms that there could be some rethinking on the part of the management and they have begun to once again probe other ideas. There has been an enquiry carried out regarding Roberto Martinez, they claim.

He is the coach who led Belgium to third place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and who is now preparing to lead Portugal at the 2024 European Championship.

He is tied to Rafael Leao’s national team by a contract that runs until 2026, meaning he would have to end it early. In his career, Martínez has also managed Swansea City, Wigan and Everton in England,

    1. Maldini wanted to sack Pioli for Pirlo. Who do you think he would have brought in now? Guardiola? Klopp? Maybe Mbappe too? Lol. It’s pure conjecture, from coaches to players.

      1. There was never a literal mention of Pirlo. It’s just a speculation. Maldini simply thought Pioli was not indispensable to the project. While the management thought otherwise.

        1. To be precise, Pirlo had denied that Maldini offer him the position.

Pirlo said it was merely talk between friends. So what happened might only be Maldini asking his friend whether he has a dream to become Milan coach in the future.

  1. The names will get a lot worse moving forward too. Not because Milan is looking at them, but because Media needs fresh content.

Just get this finalized before the season ends please…

  2. This is a complete BS rumor Roberto Martinez is definitely not a choice… the other ones, Van Bommel, Gallardo, Lopetegui, Fonseca, Conceisao, etc at least have some credibility…

What’s next, a rumor about Milan looking to hire Calzona?
