Costacurta full of praise for Milan summer signing: “He’s the smartest”

The praise continues to pour in for Tijjani Reijnders after his debut against Bologna on Monday night, with Alessandro Costacurta the latest to highlight the positives.

Reijnders got his first Serie A start at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara during the 2-0 win and we highlighted the role that he played in a new-look midfield that had Rade Krunic at the base and Ruben Loftus-Cheek as the other box-to-box player.

Costacurta spoke during a segment on Sky about the performance from the Dutchman, with his comments relayed by PianetaMilan.

“He’s the smartest one, he helps others to enhance the team. The Dutch I played with had this characteristic, they knew how to play football. What bound them together? Their anticipation. Everyone was at least a little bit ahead,” he said.

It therefore seems that the new Milan midfielder has something in common with his compatriots who moved to Milan in the past, perhaps most notably Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit, as well as Marco van Basten.

Of course the challenge for Reijnders has just begun, but the signs seen in Reggio-Emilia are certainly positive.
