Deportes COPE: Milan see €20m bid for Real Betis star rejected – the details

AC Milan have had a bid for midfielder Johnny Cardoso rejected by Real Betis and it was €10m below their asking price, according to a report.

Even before Paulo Fonseca was chosen to be the next Milan manager, there was a heavy emphasis placed on the fact that the midfield needed strengthening in terms of physicality. A more defensive-minded player is sought, one who can help shield the back four.

According to Deportes Cope Sevilla, Milan have set their sights on Johnny Cardoso, a 22-year-old midfielder who has emerged as an objective in recent days given the difficulties in signing other targets.

The Spanish club are asking for €30m to sell Cardoso but the offer from the Rossoneri was €20m, therefore there is quite a gap between the asking price and the offer that the management put forward.

An interesting note is that the USA international also has an Italian passport and therefore if he were to be signed by Milan he would not occupy the only non-EU slot left, given Strahinja Pavlovic took the other.

The New Jersey-born player made 17 appearances in LaLiga last season having joined in the winter transfer window and he got three goal contributions, more specifically a goal and two assists.

  1. His main position is defensive midfielder and him holding an Italian passport is only a good thing. Maybe if we increased our bid half way.

BTW, he was born in the US but moved to Brazil when he was 3 months old. He started his career in Brazil and played for Internacional for 5 seasons and amassed 144 appearances during that time. He’s just 22 so that’s pretty impressive.

Really surprised he didn’t try for the Brazilian National Team.

  2. God I hate this management. How cheap are these guys. Absolutely uslesless we are cheaper then any club I know. Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen people that in the day and age spend 20mill on the most average players. It’s extremely embarrassing.

These guys make me hate milan more and more

    1. Many of those “most average players” have revitalized our team and have been quite for us. You hate Milan more and more? Then go find some other teams to cheer on. Absolutely ridiculous.

      1. Revitalizing? Like ending the season with a tremendous +5 pts in Serie A compared to the previous season and 19 pts from Inter after spending more than 100M and getting multiple lousy eliminations in Europe while registering a record in goals allowed? This guy is another no name and Milan is probably after him because he has a bald eagle on his passport. Another cheap dubious target. He didn’t choose Brazil because there is competition for the national team unlike Team USA. It happens a lot in France where many guys having two nationalities decide to « transfer » to have more opportunities.

      2. Goku goof like you can celebrate profits but the real fans like us celebrate trophies even Atlanta fans can talk because they won something goof like you are supporting this stingy owners who don’t care wining trophies

      3. This is a funny comment.

Just because a fan criticizes management or ownership – your response is to go find another Club??? LOLOLOLO.

Fans should be loyal to the CLUB and COLORS and NOT who OWNS or MANAGES it. There is a huge difference. No offense my friend but you (and many others on this chat) need to grow up

I bet you had ZERO issue criticizing Li and Mirabelli and Fassone when they owned and managed the club – BUT – now, according to your logic, no one is allowed to critique Redbird or management and if we do we are not fans???? lol. Why is that exactly?? What is the difference?…..there is NONE.

A fans job is to hold ownership/management ACCOUNTABLE. There is nothing wrong with that at all. That’s fine if you think Redbird are running our club well. Others may disagree – but that DOESNT mean they are not fans. A fan always supports the team BUT holds those making decisions accountable. Do Real Madrid fans cheer when they finish 19 points out of 1st place and don’t make knock out stages for UCL????? No. We are AC Milan – not Udinese. We have a history that must be respected and we should expect titles – not just qualification. That is the standard. If you’re not ok with that then may I respectfully suggest perhaps you look for another club.

        1. The OP said he hates Milan. Is that a “fan” – or a hater – talking?

“A fans job is to hold ownership/management ACCOUNTABLE. ”

LOL!!!! Nope. I just checked. It’s not. There is no jobs at all for fans. They support the team how they feel they should and I’m pretty sure hating the club isn’t part of supporting or being a fan.

          1. Well well well…..Mr @bb. The guy who said to sell Leao for 40M and who boasted scoring 200 goals in the co-ed under 9 church league lol. How’s it going @bb?? Hahahahhaha

I didn’t think anyone would be foolish enough to take the word “job” literally – but I guess I forgot there is old @bb lol.

Ya it is a fans “job” so to speak (again not literally – figuratively) to hold ownership accountable. Owners are the stewards of the club – they come and go. But the club remains. Who said anything about hate? I love my club and always will – BUT – until these owners show me they are in it to win titles – I will criticize. I pray they prove me wrong, nothing would make me happier. But until that happens, I will not engage is blind faith like you and the rest of you Redbird lovers until they prove out. Time will tell.

            Cheers

    2. “These guys make me hate milan more and more”

GTFO then! We don’t need Milan-haters here. FFS, some people are just such a crybabies I wanna puke.

  3. Anyone know how good this guy is? I ask because Betis only signed him for €6mn a few months ago, is he already really a €25mn-€30mn player?

    1. Betis is overpricing him. THat’s why when I see people complain about us being cheaper than any club they know, I just roll my eyes hard.

      1. Yeah, if they ask for 30 offer 40 so Milan can get this player who I can guarantee the serial complainers have never heard of before and certainly have never seen play.

        1. Man this is not FIFA. You don’t recruit a random no name and train him and play him until he becomes a 90 overall. The complainers as you say ask for established players able to upgrade the starting eleven right now, with Serie A experience if possible so the adaptation is faster, and this guy is no such thing. We have enough US mascots with Pulisic and Musah, no need to recruit more, Americans are already throwing money at Jerry like he’s a Vegas stripper.

          1. I see sarcasm goes right over your head.
And if you think Johnny Cardoso will sell any jerseys or increase interest in Milan in the US you’re sadly uninformed. I rarely see a Betis game and don’t watch the US national team, even in the Copa I didn’t see any of their games, so I have no idea if he is any good. But if he went with playing for a country he lived in for 3 months versus his native Brazil, well that tells me even he thinks he isn’t good enough. And if you think Pulisic is just a mascot, not clearly one of the strengths of the current Milan team, well you’re just a moron.

    2. good enough to have interest after just 6 months of performances. PSG and Barcelona were probably the first to express interest. The fact that he is at Betis still (beyond him saying he wanted more time there) likely means the 30M is something that would open the conversation, but that they really don’t want to sell yet unless the offer is too good to ignore.

  4. Would be happy with this if it happened instead, but I don’t believe that report – if it’s true we’re offering less than that for Fofana and waiting for a response, I somewhat doubt we’re also throwing 20M bids at other players yet

  5. If truly we sent a 20 million offer, then Betis is nuts not to have collected it, they made a profit of 14 million, the player needs to request for a transfer, he would do nicely in our midfield, he is technically ok, has an Italian passport, has experience of playing more than a 100 games for international, and he is a US citizen , we get more eye balls from the US , more marketing opportunities…

  6. OMG as the weeks go by we keep seeking even more random players than the last one. I wonder if we would be linked to this guy if he wasn’t American.

    1. Well Jerry said a week ago that Milan is focused on the USA and Pulisic and Musah are parading around these days so every one can make his own conclusion if he’s really a target and join Milan.

  7. This Management have no shame hahahaha. Every player the want to buy.
They offer 50% of what his club value him at.
And Cardinale lying like a politician every time camera is on him by saying he wants to win hahahaha.
Berlusconi bought Milan and said he wants to win then brought Van Basten Gullit and Rijkaard and backed up his words and promise. This clown Cardinale only lie’s.
He want to buy cheap and raise the value of the players by finish top 4 and pocket the profit from CL money and sponsors.
He then gonna sell Milan when he gets green light to construct a new stadium.
He wants to win by profit as much as possible for him and his partners. He don’t give shit about Milan or its fans.
That’s why he got rid of Boban and Maldini because they love Milan and wanted to give back Milan that challenged for every trophie to the fans. Only way to do it is by having a owner that share that vision and spend on the squad.
Club like Real, Milan, Barca, Bayern, Liverpool etc are not for clowns like Cardinale to make money. This club are for powerful men that use to show status and power like Berlusconi did.

    1. Revenues:

      Real: 1.1B
      Bayern: 850M
      Barca: 800M
      Liverpool: 700M
      Milan: 450M (highest recorded)

You grow or you die. Just because you love something doesn’t mean you know how to keep it alive. There is still time if they continue to follow the playbook that Real used, but there is a huge gap to fill.

  8. I’m an American and have watched Johnny for a long time, for the national team, Betis, and for Internacional in Brazil. He was EXCELLENT for a very good Betis team in La Liga, he slotted into the team seamlessly after arriving in mid-season.

His best role is as a DM as part of a double pivot. He is defensively disciplined, elegant on the half turn, and helps teams progress the ball though passing, which is something that Milan lacks.

FWIW, a Musah-Johnny double pivot has looked promising for the USA, since Johnny’s progressive passing compliments Musah’s elite ability to progress on the dribble.

That said, Johnny is not a starter for the USA when everyone is fit (yet), he’s behind Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams in the pecking order, even if he is better on the ball than both.

It is unlikely that Betis will let him go since they’ve transferred other players in his position to make room for him. But since his skill set fits a role that Milan are missing, Milan might be tempted to overpay.

    I hope this helps.

  9. Tyler Adams is crocked now with his back surgery, Weston McKennie showed up out of shape at the Copa America and yet Nepo Hire Berhalter still started both players….

Hopefully the new USMNT coach actually starts players who are at the top of their games, which should have been Johnny Cardoso.

Pellegrino Matarazzo (Hoffenheim) has popped up as the latest rumored USMNT candidate for coach.
