MN: Evolution not revolution – Milan’s choice is targeted signings and continuity

By Oliver Fisher -

While there is currently a lot of speculation surrounding the moves AC Milan might make under their new owners, plenty of it is destined to remain as white noise.

Despite the many difficulties that Milan battles last season with injuries, Covid cases, suspensions and above all serious refereeing errors, Stefano Pioli’s side deservedly won the Scudetto and the feeling is that a real platform has been built to go further from.

MilanNews writes how there has been an exponential improvement, both technically and mentally, in the squad and the directors with the help of Pioli seems to have created a team with the right mix of young, confident players and the experienced, more composed veterans.

Rather than opting for revolution, the feeling among Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara is that the way this group grows is through continuity. Junior Messias and Alessandro Florenzi, on loan respectively from Crotone and Roma last season, will be signed on a permanent basis.

New owners RedBird Capital and their founder Gerry Cardinale agree about the path of continuity but are also happy to support targeted new signings such as Divock Origi on a free transfer, Renato Sanches from Lille, potentially Sven Botman for the defence and a forward like Charles De Ketelaere and/or Noa Lang.

The goal is clear: to improve the team, especially in roles where there is a lack of quality, but without compromising what made it successful.

  1. We aren’t getting CDK, Botman, Bremer, Zaniolo etc…these are fantasy. I think we will be a bit disappointed at end of transfer window especially in light of the moves Inter and Juve are making

    1. You guys should be patient with the team and allow the management to work.
Last January reinforce their team so much but Milan barely did.at the end of the season who won the scuddeto. Trust in the management. They know what they are doing. You don’t love Milan than Maldini.

  2. evolution not revolution, so we might wait another 11 years to win the scudetto again?

“the goal is clear: to improve the team, especially in roles where there is a lack of quality, but without compromising what made it successful.”
i’m not sure about this, but i’m really glad if i’m wrong.

  3. I actually agree with the idea of Evolution instead of revolution. Just adding big names doesn’t mean it will work. What a team needs is to add players who have the quality and the mentality to do well by fitting properly into how we play.

Take Vlahovic in account. He doesn’t lack the quality. Allegri is a good coach. But, somehow.. he is not thriving in Juve.

Mentality matters. Which is why I don’t want Lang no matter how good a player he is. I would take Rebic over Lang a 100%. Hell I would take Krunic Over Lang tho Krunic is inferior in Quality but Krunic, gives his all for the team and that MATTERS.

It’s the same reason I would prefer Belotti if we plan to add a ST. It’s a no brainer.

But we really have to move fast in the market. We keep delaying on deals hoping for discounts and its backfiring EVERY Time because some EPL club is doubling the previous asking price.

CDK was 30 mil, now that Milan interest is in the media, somehow, it’s 40 mil now. I am sure some EPL club is gonna offer 50 and get him, but we delayed long enough to try get a discount on 30 mil.

The only advantage we have over rich clubs is going under the radar with certainty and closing deals quickly before the club goes into a bidding war. It applies also for renewals.

    Forza Milan.

    1. Agree with this 100%, another thing to add is I keep hearing how we plan to sell some of the very players that were the foundation of this resurgence like Sealemakers, Rebic, and Leao. I honestly don’t know what the thinking there is. We need to keep all the good guys we currently have instead of trying to get other players who are gonna be an experiment.

I would think the guys we have proved their determination and ambition and they are already tried and tested. Its good to add to that but its as important not to disturb the synergy of the guys already in the dressing room.

I also dont know why we hesitate on closing renewals, if there’s anything that makes a player have second thoughts it’s how the club takes time to show its appreciation for a player. We need to bank on that camaraderie between the players because successful clubs are built on that.
