Ex-Milan director reveals background on Pedri talks and discusses Milan-Chelsea relationship

Former AC Mlan sporting director Rocco Maiorino has revealed some interesting background on how Pedri nearly joined the club.

The teenager has somewhat exploded onto the scene over the last few months as he has been given a change to show what he can do in Barcelona’s first team. It was back in September 2019 that the Catalan side reached an agreement with Las Palmas for the transfer of Pedri, effective as of the following 1 July 2020 and with a transfer fee of €5m.

Maiorino spoke to Sky Italia about Pedri and revealed the background on how he nearly ended up signing for Milan, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews.

“I had spoken to Milan because I had almost a moral obligation towards the club that had raised me at work. I remember that they had gone to see him in Malaga but Barcelona were already ahead in the negotiations. It is complicated for an Italian team to sign a football player quickly, also because he didn’t make the youth national teams. Barcelona had the skill to close in a short time,” he said.

Regarding the current transfer market, Milan continue to be linked with a number of Chelsea players after the Fikayo Tomori operation such as Olivier Giroud, Hakim Ziyech and Tiemoue Bakayoko. Maiorino believes relations between the two clubs are good enough for that to facilitate operations.

“I believe that such complex operations can be facilitated by the good relations between the clubs and Milan and Chelsea have excellent relations. Then without a doubt the will of the players also counts a lot,” he said.
