Florenzi admits injury caused betting relapse: “Went to offset the debt”

Last year, there were several footballers questioned in relation to an illegal betting ring, and AC Milan players were involved in the process.

In the past two years, there has been a lot about the betting scandal which rocked Italian football. Of course, Sandro Tonali was the biggest victim in the situation, being forced to watch from the sidelines last season.

Nevertheless, he was not the only person involved in the proceedings. In fact, he was not the only Milan player linked to the betting scandal, with Alessandro Florenzi also being part of the questioning. However, his story seemed much different.

A recent report emerged, where Tonali had spoken to Tommaso De Giacomo, who was the manager of the bets, about Florenzi’s winnings and habits, and it certainly did not seem positive for the defender.

Florenzi’s words about the betting situation and his reasoning have been relayed today by Corriere dello Sport.

“I had excluded myself from the legal ones because I gambled too much after a couple of months, when I had a serious injury.

“I have placed bets on other sports such as tennis […] also for this reason I have not been sanctioned by the Federation. I have never won playing on those illegal platforms; the few winnings went to offset the debt, so I have never withdrawn money. If I had ever won, I have no idea how the payment would have been made, whether in cash or via watches.

“I asked Sandro Tonali how much I wanted, and he would upload it to the site to play, and then, when I always lost, Sandro would send me the invoice and tell me how to pay.”

The report ends, stating that Florenzi had admitted to losing as much as €300k, which was ‘never paid’.
