Paulo Fonseca was viewed quite naturally when he left AC Milan in December, with many supporting his methods, and today, he has offered some insight into his time at the club.
It has been four months since Fonseca was booted from his role as the Rossoneri’s head coach, a decision which still feels harsh in nature. After all, the Portuguese was sacked mid-match, and still faced the press after the game, who then asked about his future.
Despite results being largely poor during his tenure, though, there was a respect for the head coach from the Curva Sud, and this showed during their 125th anniversary protests, where several members of the squad and management were criticised.
Today, speaking to L’Equipe, the head coach has spoken about his time with Milan, and some of the behind-the-scenes difficulties with having such a role, which have impacted his current job, and Milan News have relayed his words.
“I have never, not even in my personal life or in my childhood, committed the slightest aggression. I have always been a very calm person. So I don’t want to look for excuses or give the impression of justifying myself. I have done wrong, I recognise it.
“At that moment of the match, there was a lot of tension, I had just received a red card because I had contested a foul. Why did I have such a strong reaction? I confess that I did not like the way the referee was directing the match.
“Between AC Milan and Lyon, I didn’t have a moment’s rest. And you can’t imagine the pressure of coaching AC Milan. Maybe I should have taken a break, but I don’t want to make excuses.”
In hindsight Fonseca got a bad shake. I liked his idea of rapid ball movement and more emphasis on controlling possession and importantly the tempo. Unfortunately the fans were never going to accept him and the players rejected him too. Pretty sure though with his points average Milan would be close or in a CL spot…
Yeah.you are right
You should release your anger in milan. Punch theo or leao, don’t accumulated your anger.
Now you release your anger in wrong man, headbut skinny coach, that’s not brave as zorro.
You should learn from conceicao. He became madman in milan, he want to punch calabria, but somebody blocked it.
Skinny referee
Trash Fonseca ball vs Man Utd. Up 2 goals with 10 mins to go and threw it all away. Take out your best player which gave you the outlet on the counter (Cherki). And puts in a left back who hasn’t played much under Fonz, rather than a central or defensive mid to cover for Tolisso’s absence. Make that make sense. Then takes off the experienced Taglifico for Caleta Car who has barely played under him and probably not even match sharp. Could have just kept Tag on as they were going to sit back anyways.
Yep sounds exactly like Fonsy at Milan benching best players like Leao and co, poor subs / game management and snapping loss from jaws of victory. Nothing ain’t changed.
