Fonseca defends ‘magnificent’ Morata and disagrees with Fofana’s assessment of Monza win

Paulo Fonseca has admitted that he was happy with how Rafael Leao did off the bench against Monza, and praised Alvaro Morata for what he provided.

Milan got a much needed three points and a clean sheet against their neighbours from up the road, however it was another performance that was not exactly overflowing with positives.

It was far from a classic game in truth between two sides low on confidence, but the only goal of the game came late in the first half as Tijjani Reijnders pounced on a blocked Alvaro Morata header to put the Rossoneri 1-0 up.

The home side had their chances to make it a tough night for Milan with Daniel Maldini in particular missing a couple of opportunities, yet Alessandro Nesta’s side remain in a relegation battle after another tough result.

Fonseca spoke to Sky after the game to give his thoughts after what was a rather tough win to judge, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

Fofana said that today Milan didn’t play well but they won. Today, is the result more important than anything else?

“Yes, it was very important to win, but I don’t really agree with Fofana, we had important moments during the match. I think we deserved to score more goals for what we did in the second half.”

Now Real Madrid are next…

“I’m always excited for every game. I don’t think the game against Real is more important than today’s, they’re all important. We needed to win, it’s always difficult to play here: last year Milan lost here, today we played a good game.”

Did Leao come on and do well?

“Yes, he came on and did well. That’s the most important thing. It’s important to have this reaction from Rafa, that’s what I want.”

Is he ready for Madrid?

“Yes, I think he’s ready.”

At the end of the year, who will be the player with the most goals? Morata works hard all over the pitch but doesn’t score…

“I really like that you talk about Morata, I also want to talk about Morata. He had opportunities, if he hadn’t had them I would be worried. But what Morata does for the team, how he played, for me was magnificent.

“Without a doubt he was the man of the match. He had opportunities to score and he didn’t score, but he will come.”

Aren’t you worried about the chances given to other teams?

“In the first half we were not very aggressive in the duels, but in the second half I don’t remember any opportunities from Monza. They had 2-3 chances to score with merit, in the interval we talked about things to correct defensively and then we controlled.”

  1. Fonseca is coach from another planet. For now, luck, maignan and management hold his back. Eventually if he keeps like same, those three will disappear..

  2. Well, no, Paulo. I agree with Fofana, not with you. Fofana was right that Milan didn’t play well. You, the head coach, should know better but it seems like you don’t have a clue, and one of your players actually shows a lot better judgment.

And Morata, magnificent? The guy spent the whole game throwing himself to the ground and whining to the ref instead of playing ball.

    1. Yeah he’s not helping himself with these comments. Milan played better in the 2nd half but it still wasn’t good. Also Morata as man of the match? I’m not sure anyone played worse than him.

  3. The 3 points gained don’t make up for the team performance. It’s just difficult to watch this Fonseca team. This team is going nowhere and the coach should be changed for an emerging Italian (like Vanoli or Pecchia) or an established coach like Tuchel or Allegri.

  4. I don’t think Morata was great but I can’t stand the virgins here who hate on him for having a bad day at the office, like literally every other striker on the planet. Get a grip kiddies. You sound just as idiotic as the clown in the suit saying we played well.

Thankfully we have puli back now, fofana looks like he’s growing into the team and multiple interception today, Chuk looks high in confidence, and I don’t mind Terra at RB (anything is better than royal). But this was a slog to watch, barely any real chance creation whatsoever and simply nobody seemed on it today. Leao miss easily the worst, I’m sick of seeing him try to be nonchalant with his finishing, just put it tf away

  5. Milan nema ni igru ni tempo !! Zadnja linija dodava loptu unatrag djeluju prestrašeno i nesigurno ! Nemaju nikakvu kombinaciju na presing i ne mogu iznijet loptu naprijed ! Totalna neuigranost ! Morata je ljudi moji KATASTROFA ! Okafor i Cukveze srednja Žalost !

  6. Yes, Morata was useless at what he is actually supposed to do – reacting danger and scoring. But, what Fonseca demands above anything else from all his players is to work hard and play for the team. And that’s what Morata did. Therefore Fonseca simply cannot criticise him in public, cause this would mean to throw away everything he preached so far. I’m sure he knows that it’s a straight lie that Morata was the best, but he needs to protect the players who are absolutely willing to follow his instructions. Internally he surely talks more like Fofana.

  7. generally this game proof that there is no hope for the future. Conte is being proof what is the real progress.
this what we have got in Milan is just misery, fighting with bad reality.

  8. The Journalist replies ” Yes, mister but, Leao is not Loftus-Cheek, he’s not Musah. For status, it’s news when he goes on the bench three times’

Fonseca response: ‘No, for me Leao is like Loftus-Cheek and Musah. Status does not go on the field’.

This guy is really somethin else man.

  9. If this management is serious and really have a winning dominating plan, we should get a new coach next season.

I’ve seen enough to of his game to conclude that this Milan is not upgrading much under him.

  10. Babies you are all babies in here.
Show some respect and support your coach, you people wanted to get rid of Pioli because he lost against Inter all the time.

  11. Someone said Milan under Fonseca is having a step forward and two steps backward…. I don’t know if I should laugh or cry
