After AC Milan’s game against Atalanta, Paulo Fonseca made some suggestions about the referee Federico La Penna, and now he has been fined alongside the club.

Frustrations were high after the Atalanta game, there can be no denying that. Milan, who were slowly slipping away from the title race, lost a game at the death in a manner that Fonseca deemed to be unfair and a regular against his side.

Reports after suggested that the club wanted to avoid a ban for the head coach, so took on a fine instead, and today, the results of this have been published.

As Calciomercato.com report, the club have been handed a €5,000 fine for the comments, with Fonseca being handed a heavier €10,000. The reason for this is due to Article 23 of the Sports Justice Code.

“At the end of the match, Atalanta-Milan played on 6 December last and valid for the 15th day of the Serie A Championship – during the usual post-match interviews granted to the press – expressed judgements damaging to the prestige and reputation of both the referee of the match, Federico La Penna, and, for the effect and more in general, of the refereeing institution as a whole.”

Considering how far out of the title race the Rossoneri have fallen, it probably was not a fault of the officiating.

  1. These clown refs are the ones ruining their reputation. This fine is just more mortar cementing the opinion that Italian reffs are more concerned with status and ego than facilitating an entertaining game. Incompetence is plain and their outdated sense of machismo is a discredit to calcio

  2. Did he call him a figlio de putana or something or just suggested that he had been bribed which he and a great deal of the refs and VAR people certainly gives me the impression of 😛

I truly miss the days of pierluigi collina that was a real referee that demanded and deserved respect and also got it from his peers players of that era.
