After beating the Scudetto holders Inter, Paulo Fonseca has his eyes firmly on winning the trophy this season, and with a dominant showing against the reigning champions, it is understandable why he believes AC Milan can do it.
Beating Inter is a task that Milan have not done in two years, and then Fonseca, a manager under immense pressure, beat the Nerazzurri. If there was a way to save your job, the Portuguese head coach executed it perfectly, and now, he can restart the season, and his Rossoneri career.
In pre-season, there was excitement about his football, but with an opening day draw against Torino, doubt arose, and they remained in place until the derby. It would be fair to suggest they may still linger, but the head coach has instilled some faith in his methods with a monumental victory.
Speaking in his press conference earlier today, Fonseca spoke on his targets for the season and explained why he has his sights set on success.
“It’s been a long time since Milan won a derby, it brings confidence and another atmosphere in the team. I’m like that, I always try to be balanced. A game can obviously help the players with confidence, but it’s just one game.
“If we don’t win tomorrow then we go backwards. We have to forget the derby, and just concentrate on the next game which is the most important. The atmosphere is positive and that’s important, but it’s also important to realise that the derby is in the past and doesn’t matter anymore.
“It was important but the future is more important. On the Scudetto I keep saying what I said on the first day: at Milan, we have to think about the Scudetto, we cannot think about anything else.”
